‘Let’s go’ – nervous Newcastle striker Callum Wilson sends Champions League message to Liverpool

Liverpool are closing in on the top four after the two defeats against Newcastle and Manchester United last weekend

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has expressed concerns over Liverpool’s rise to the Premier League table as the battle for fourth place intensifies.

The Reds are now just a point clear of the Champions League places after winning six games in a row and benefiting from weekend defeats at Newcastle and Manchester United.

Liverpool’s rivals for the top four still have the advantage of being a game ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side and will look to use that to avoid stumbling at the final hurdle.

Wilson is clearly feeling the pressure of recent results and admits the Reds’ resurgence in the North East has not gone unnoticed. “Liverpool need to relax!” the striker told The Footballer’s Football Podcast. “I said a few weeks ago I could smell [Champions League], now that smell is gone. I don’t know where it went. [Sniffles] I can’t find it!”

“This game [Newcastle 0-2 Arsenal] shows once again that we still have a long way to go. We have Leeds and Leicester in play and both are in a relegation battle. We need three out of four wins.”

Next on Newcastle’s agenda on Saturday afternoon is Leeds United, who are fighting their own battle at the other end of the table. Liverpool won’t play until Monday night, traveling to the King Power Stadium to face another team looking to avoid relegation: Leicester City.
