Manchester United fans have asked Ruud van Nistelrooy to join Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff following news of his resignation from PSV Eindhoven.

Van Nistelrooy informed the Dutch club on Wednesday of his decision to step down with immediate effect, having spent just one season with the club. The Dutchman signed a three-year deal last year when he replaced Roger Schmidt, but he has said he no longer feels the support of everyone at the club.

The former Reds player worked his way up through the PSV youth academy, impressing in separate spells with the under-17s and under-19s before being promoted last year.

PSV have one game left of the Eredivisie season and only need an extra point against AZ Alkmaar to confirm their second place, which makes the timing of Van Nistelrooy’s departure all the more surprising. And United fans, who have been following the former striker’s progress in Holland, have invited Van Nistelrooy to join compatriot Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
