The Boston Red Sox wrapped up their third consecutive non-winning season in 2024, finishing with an 81-81 record. President of baseball operations Craig Breslow is looking to strengthen the starting rotation by acquiring an ace. One potential target could be Seattle Mariners’ right-hander.
So far, Boston has been aggressive in free agency, reportedly pursuing outfielder Juan Soto and showing interest in top free-agent pitchers Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. However, if Burnes and Fried choose other destinations, the Red Sox might need to turn to the trade market for their ace.
Among the trade possibilities, one name stands out: Garrett Crochet, as the Chicago White Sox are open to moving him this offseason. Another compelling option is Castillo, who has a proven track record and has appeared in various trade scenarios.
Abreu, a Gold Glove winner who placed sixth in AL Rookie of the Year voting, posted a .781 OPS with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs over 447 plate appearances in 2024. Meidroth and Garcia, ranked 11th and 12th among Boston’s top prospects by MLB.com, would also be part of the package.
Acquiring Castillo would give the Red Sox a three-time All-Star with consistent durability, having started at least 25 games each season since 2021. Over that time, he has posted a solid 3.51 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Under contract through 2027 as part of a five-year, $108 million extension with Seattle, Castillo is set to earn $24.15 million annually from 2025-2027, with a $25 million vesting option for 2028.
