Cincinnati Reds sign free agent catcher Will Banfield….

On December 6, 2024, the Cincinnati Reds made a notable addition to their roster by signing free agent catcher Will Banfield to a one-year contract. Banfield, 25, is a former top prospect in the Miami Marlins organization, known for his strong defensive skills behind the plate. While his offensive numbers have been somewhat inconsistent, his potential as a defensive catcher has generated interest from teams looking to strengthen their catching depth.

Banfield was originally selected by the Marlins in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Throughout his minor league career, he has earned a reputation for his excellent arm strength, framing ability, and leadership on the field. Banfield’s ability to manage a pitching staff and his potential to develop offensively makes him an intriguing option for the Reds as they look to improve their catching situation.

In recent seasons, Banfield has played in the upper levels of the minors, primarily with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate. He has shown flashes of offensive upside, including occasional power, but his primary value remains on the defensive side of the game. Over his career, Banfield has posted a solid throwing percentage and demonstrated the ability to control the running game, a key asset for any major league catcher.

For the Reds, Banfield provides depth at the catcher position, potentially competing for a backup or platoon role in spring training. His signing could also help push other Reds’ catchers to improve, offering them a more experienced presence behind the plate. While Banfield may not immediately make a significant impact offensively, his defensive abilities and potential for growth could make him a valuable piece for the Reds’ future plans.
