Call them the kings of the second half. For the second straight game to open the season, the Colorado Mammoth scored 10 second-half goals to earn a comeback win in National Lacrosse League action Friday night.
OK, so it wasn’t like the huge comeback Colorado had last week against Vancouver, but the Mammoth did trail 6-5 after Las Vegas scored the first two goals of the third quarter. From there, Colorado poured in seven-straight goals en route to a 15-9 runaway win over the Desert Dogs.
A trio of Mammoth had hat tricks—Ryan Lee (3G, 4A), Eli McLaughlin (3G, 3A) and Zed Williams (3G, 3A)—but none of them led the team in scoring. That honor once again went to Connor Kelly, who topped his seven-point outing from a week ago by scoring two goals and six assists, including assists on each of Lee’s three goals.
Dillon Ward had a busy night in the Mammoth net, facing 55 shots, and responded with a strong effort, posting an .836 save percentage by stopping 46 of them.
Jack Hannah, like Kelly, topped his strong Week 1 performance (4G, 2A vs. Rochester) by putting up four goals and three assists. That makes Hannah, for now, the leading goal-scorer in the league with eight while Kelly is the top scorer with 15 points.
Saturday will be a busy night in the NLL, with four games on tap: Calgary at Halifax, Buffalo at Rochester, Albany at Toronto and San Diego at Georgia.
