REPORT: New York Mets To Lose $174 Million Homegrown All-Star Slugger Pete Alonso To Hated Rival New York Yankees
The New York Mets made a major move by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a record $765 million deal. There is optimism that the Mets can also re-sign their homegrown All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso to protect Soto in the lineup. However, the New York Yankees could try to lure Alonso to the Bronx instead.
Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, has expressed interest in keeping Alonso, and team owner Steve Cohen hopes the 30-year-old will remain in Queens for 2025 and beyond. Now that Soto’s deal is finalized, Alonso’s market for potential suitors will start to emerge.
The Yankees have a clear need at first base after a lackluster 2024 season in that spot. Anthony Rizzo, who had the most time there, is now a free agent following the Yankees’ decision not to pick up his $17 million option. After seeing Soto leave for the Mets, will Yankees general manager Brian Cashman attempt to make up for it by signing Alonso to a lucrative contract?
Reports suggest that Alonso and the Yankees have some mutual interest. Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston believes that although Alonso will likely stay in New York, he may choose the Yankees over the Mets.
Spotrac has estimated Alonso’s market value at six years and $174 million. Other teams reportedly interested in him this offseason include the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, and Washington Nationals. Depending on the level of competition for his services, Alonso could exceed this estimate with his next contract.
