To the surprise of its fan base, Ohio State won’t be going with its traditional uniforms for next Saturday’s showdown with Tennessee.
Ohio State ended its regular season on a sour note, dropping a rivalry game to Michigan despite being favored by three touchdowns. Although the loss will sting until next year’s meeting, the Buckeyes have to get themselves off the mat and prepare for the College Football Playoff. Their first-round matchup against the Volunteers won’t be a walk in the park. At times this season, Tennessee has looked like a legitimate national title contender.
Though we won’t find out until next weekend just how prepared Ohio State is for the CFP, it’s becoming very apparent that Ryan Day’s squad will wear its all-scarlet uniforms.
Judging by the reactions on social media, Ohio State’s decision to snub its traditional look isn’t sitting well with the public.
NFL reporter Ben Axelrod said, “Why do this for such a historic home game?”
“Getting our season ended in style,” one fan wrote.
Another fan tweeted, “I hope there is this much effort in winning the game.”
“Just keep distracting from the fact they may not win the game,” a fourth person commented.
The Buckeyes have already asked their fans to “Scarlet the Shoe” for next Saturday’s game, so there should be a sea of scarlet at Ohio Stadium. Whether or not that’ll actually matter will only be determined when the game kicks off.

Ohio State has the talent to win a national title, there’s no doubt about it. This team nearly defeated Oregon on the road back in October. This same core of players squashed Indiana at home.
Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, they’ve just been way too inconsistent with their offensive play-calling to be considered a reliable pick for their first-round matchup in the CFP.
All that being said, ESPN’s computer model gives the Buckeyes a 65.2 percent chance of defeating the Volunteers. Those are pretty good odds for Ryan Day’s squad.
Kickoff for the Ohio State-Tennessee game will be at 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 21. It’ll be televised on ABC.
