JUST IN: New York Mets land Texas Rangers closer Kirby Yates to eliminate all question marks from bullpen

The New York Mets have a chance to solidify their bullpen for next season by signing one of the top relievers in MLB, who is currently available on the open market.

Mets tied to FA superstar closer Kirby Yates

Kirby Yates ready to contribute to Rangers bullpenJackson Roberts of The Sporting News highlighted a connection drawn by an MLB analyst between former Texas Rangers closer Kirby Yates and the New York Mets. He noted:

“Recently, Allison Waxman of Metsmerized Online identified 2024 All-Star Kirby Yates, formerly with the Rangers, as one of the top free-agent options for the Mets’ bullpen this offseason,” Roberts wrote.

He supported the potential match, stating:

“Tim Britton of The Athletic projects Yates to land a one-year, $10.5 million deal. Even as Yates approaches his late 30s, it’s tough to see the Mets regretting a short-term contract during this aggressive spending period,” Roberts added.

Mets: Yates still has a lot to offer a team at advanced age

In his debut season with the Rangers, Yates delivered a career-best performance, lowering his ERA to an impressive 1.17 and his WHIP to 0.83. At 37, he demonstrated remarkable efficiency and clutch play, securing 33 saves—sixth-most in the Majors in 2024—out of 34 opportunities, proving he still has elite talent.

However, his age is a key consideration for the Mets as they weigh offering him a one-year deal worth eight figures. Even so, Yates could bring significant value to New York in 2025.

Mets: Yates could counteract bullpen dry spells from 2024

Mets star closer Edwin Díaz experienced several slumps during the 2024 season, prompting the coaching staff to occasionally use him in the seventh and eighth innings. This approach aimed to address his seven blown saves and help him regain his elite form.

As a solution, New York might consider signing Kirby Yates to create a formidable closing duo for critical situations. Alternatively, Yates could excel as a top-tier setup man in the eighth inning, allowing Díaz to retain his role as the ninth-inning closer.
