REPORT: New York Mets Acquire Arizona Diamondbacks Bounce-Back Star Jordan Montgomery, To Provide Them With Left-Handed Starter In 2-Player Trade Proposal
The New York Mets still need at least one more pitcher to round out their rotation.
President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has worked on rebuilding the rotation this offseason, bringing in Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. However, the team remains one reliable starter short.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly open to trade offers for Jordan Montgomery, who is coming off the second-worst season of his career. Could Montgomery be a good fit for the Mets?
Currently, the Mets’ rotation includes four confirmed starters: Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga—all right-handers. After losing lefty José Quintana to free agency, the Mets could benefit from adding a southpaw to the mix.
Here’s what a potential trade might look like:
New York Mets Receive:Â SP Jordan Montgomery
Arizona Diamondbacks Receive:Â RHP Jonah Tong (Mets No. 10 prospect), cash considerations
Montgomery is under team control for just one more year before becoming a free agent in 2026, which limits his trade value.
As for the Mets’ side of the deal, Montgomery would bring a dependable left-handed presence to the rotation, capable of eating innings. In 2024, he excelled with the Texas Rangers, posting a 2.79 ERA at home and a combined 3.20 ERA between his time with the Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.
On the Diamondbacks’ side, Jonah Tong is a promising young arm. The right-hander was called up to Double-A Binghamton late last season, where he recorded a 2.89 ERA across two starts. He’s expected to begin 2025 at Double-A but could advance to Triple-A if he continues to impress.
