The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason aiming to strengthen their roster. They’ve made moves like adding Garrett Crochet, but further improvements are still needed.
While Alex Bregman could be a potential target, his future remains uncertain, and it’s unclear whether the Red Sox will secure a deal for the two-time World Series champion.
Looking to the future, Boston may prioritize saving money and targeting other areas. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., set to hit free agency next winter unless the Toronto Blue Jays extend him, is a player the Red Sox have shown interest in.
This potential future pursuit of Guerrero could influence the Red Sox’s current moves, but according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, she doesn’t believe it’s affecting their inability to land either Nolan Arenado or Bregman.
“We’ve received many questions about whether the team is holding off on signing Bregman or trading for Arenado in anticipation of Guerrero hitting the market after the 2025 season. While the idea makes sense in theory, teams rarely plan like that because so many variables are involved—whether Guerrero stays healthy, whether he wants to join the team, or if the Dodgers offer him a massive deal,” McCaffrey explained.
Saving money for Guerrero would be ideal, but there’s no guarantee he will become available. The Red Sox would also have tough competition for the slugger, given he’s one of the better hitters in baseball.
Coming off a .323/.396/.544 and 30 home run showing, he’d be an excellent addition to Boston.
Still, that shouldn’t stop the Red Sox from improving right now.
