Boston Red Sox Make Final Contract Offer to Alex Bregman, Refuse to Budge
Red Sox Establish Non-Negotiable Contract Parameters for Alex Bregman
The Boston Red Sox have made their interest in Alex Bregman known, but the star third baseman still remains on the market.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Bregman wants to make as much or more as he did last season. Heyman added that the Houston Astros are willing to sign the right-handed slugger to a six-year, $156 million offer, which they presented him earlier in the offseason.
Six years is what Bregman wants and something the Red Sox might have to give him if they wish to have him in Fenway.
However, according to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Boston was only willing to offer him a deal for four seasons.
“Part of the problem is Bregman is seeking a deal of six years or so. The Red Sox reportedly were willing to go up to four years, which would allow them to shift some players around the diamond, but six years makes it tough,” McCaffrey wrote.
Those extra two years on a 30-year-old could be significant, especially after Bregmans slowed down some for the Astros during the 2024 campaign.
This will ultimately come down to whether the Red Sox believe he would put them over the top. Bregman has shown throughout his career that he’s one of the better players in baseball, but if Boston isn’t willing to up its offer, it’d be tough to blame the front office.
The last thing the Red Sox need is a contract on the books they aren’t happy with.
