Free agent Alex Bregman’s current standing with teams, including the Boston Red Sox, remains uncertain.
In December, reports suggested the Houston Astros extended a six-year offer to Bregman, with the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers also showing interest. However, as pitchers and catchers report to spring training, Bregman remains unsigned, leaving him and potential suitors with a shrinking window to finalize a deal before Opening Day.
For Boston, fewer than seven weeks remain until the start of the 2025 season. Meanwhile, the Red Sox may be considering backup options, a sentiment shared by chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
“The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers have also expressed varying levels of interest in both (Justin) Turner and Bregman,” Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported.
However, roster considerations could impact Boston’s approach, as they already have Triston Casas at first base, Rafael Devers at third, and Masataka Yoshida as the designated hitter. The Tigers, on the other hand, seem focused on younger players, shifting Colt Keith to first base to accommodate Gleyber Torres at second.

Turner, entering his age-40 season in 2025, brings 16 years of MLB experience. The two-time All-Star previously played for the Red Sox in 2023, earning respect for his leadership and steady production. That season, he hit .276 with 23 home runs and 96 RBIs, quickly becoming a fan favorite at Fenway Park.
Boston has been active in upgrading its pitching staff, adding Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman to the bullpen while strengthening the rotation with Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval. However, they have yet to make a major addition to their lineup.
Turner could fill that void.
After leaving Boston, Turner split the 2024 season between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners, batting .259 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 139 games. If he were to return to the Red Sox, he could primarily serve as a designated hitter, allowing Casas to handle first base.
Last offseason, Turner signed a one-year, $13 million deal with Toronto. Now, as he nears the end of his career, he may have just enough left for one final season—potentially back in Boston.
