BIG-NEWS: “Yankees Have a Hidden Secret Weapon for the Outfield – And It Could Be a Game Changer for Jasson Domínguez!”

All signs point to Jasson Domínguez securing a spot in the Yankees’ outfield this season. Although injuries have limited the highly regarded prospect to just a couple of big-league appearances in recent years, he’s fully healthy this spring, and the Yankees are excited to see him take the next step.

However, as both manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman have recently stated, Domínguez still has to earn his place in the starting lineup during spring training. This may be a way of keeping Domínguez motivated, despite his clear path to playing time. As a young, still-developing player, a strong spring performance could help build momentum heading into Opening Day.

“He’s a young guy who still has to go out and earn it,” Boone said at camp earlier this week. “He’s in a good place right now, and he’s got a good look in his eye. He’s going to get every chance to be that guy, and we’re hoping he shows us that.”

Cashman echoed similar sentiments at media day in Bradenton, Fla., saying, “Ultimately, there’s a lane for him to take, and we know he’s got the talent to seize it… We’re excited to see the full version of him on both sides of the ball, and we think he can help us. He has a chance to prove it.”

Domínguez is likely to play left field, with Cody Bellinger in center. His progress defensively will be key, especially considering his struggles at the position when he debuted in September. The Yankees had to stick with Alex Verdugo in left during the playoffs as a result.

While it would be a major surprise for Domínguez to lose his spot this spring, the Yankees do have a solid backup option in Trent Grisham. Cashman praised Grisham’s defensive abilities and noted that the team believes he still has more to offer. Despite struggling offensively last season with limited playing time, Grisham was re-signed on a one-year, $5 million deal.

If all goes according to plan, Grisham will remain a defensive substitute and reserve player, providing depth for the Yankees. He’ll likely only see more playing time if Bellinger shifts to right field to accommodate Giancarlo Stanton’s rest or to give Paul Goldschmidt occasional days off.
