July 2, 2024

In a significant recruiting victory, the Texas Longhorns have secured the commitment of four-star EDGE rusher Smith Orogbo from Alief Hastings High School in Houston, Texas. Orogbo, a highly sought-after prospect in the 2025 class, chose Texas over a host of top programs, including Oklahoma, Washington, and Texas Tech. His decision marks a pivotal moment for the Longhorns as they continue to build a formidable recruiting class under head coach Steve Sarkisian.

A Coveted Prospect

Smith Orogbo’s recruitment garnered national attention, with 39 scholarship offers from elite programs across the country. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, Orogbo is recognized for his explosive first step, relentless motor, and versatility on the defensive line. In his junior season, he recorded 73 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and two forced fumbles, showcasing his ability to disrupt offenses and make impactful plays.

Ranked as the No. 26 overall prospect and the No. 3 EDGE rusher in the 2025 class by On3, Orogbo’s commitment is a testament to Texas’s recruiting prowess and the program’s upward trajectory.

Choosing the Longhorns

Orogbo’s decision to commit to Texas was influenced by several factors, including the program’s tradition, coaching staff, and proximity to home. “Man, it felt like home,” Orogbo stated, emphasizing the comfort and connection he felt with the Texas program.

The relationship with defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and new defensive line coach Kenny Baker played a crucial role in Orogbo’s commitment. Their vision for his development and utilization within the defense resonated with the young prospect. “The way they develop me as a player. Alumni connection and stuff like that. How it’s close to home,” Orogbo explained when discussing his reasons for choosing Texas.

Impact on Texas’s Recruiting Class

Orogbo becomes the 13th commitment in Texas’s 2025 recruiting class, joining a group that includes other notable defensive linemen such as four-star Lance Jackson and four-star defensive tackle Brandon Brown. His addition bolsters the Longhorns’ defensive front and adds depth to a unit that has been a focal point in recent recruiting cycles.

The commitment also signifies Texas’s ability to win key recruiting battles against traditional rivals and SEC competitors. Orogbo’s choice to stay in-state and represent the Longhorns underscores the program’s appeal to top-tier talent within Texas.

Looking Ahead

As Texas transitions into the Southeastern Conference, securing commitments from elite defensive prospects like Orogbo is essential for competing at the highest level. His skill set aligns with the demands of SEC play, and his development under the Texas coaching staff will be closely watched.

Orogbo’s commitment is not only a win on the recruiting trail but also a statement of intent from the Longhorns as they aim to reestablish themselves as a national powerhouse. With a strong foundation in place, Texas is poised to make significant strides in the coming seasons.
