The 2025 season may not have ended with a national championship for the Oklahoma Sooners, but head coach Patty Gasso has nothing but pride for her team. After a hard-fought campaign that ended in the Women’s College World Series semifinals, Gasso described the season as a “joyous ride”—one that will be remembered not only for wins and highlights but for the unwavering bond among her players.
“This team has shown heart, grit, and love for one another every step of the way,” Gasso said during her postgame press conference Monday night. “It didn’t end the way we wanted, but the journey we took was nothing short of incredible. I’ll remember this team for how they made each other better—on and off the field.”
The Sooners entered the 2025 season with sky-high expectations following years of dominance, including multiple national titles. Although they fell short of hoisting the trophy this time, the squad faced challenges with a maturity and unity that deeply impressed fans and opponents alike. From battling key injuries to overcoming early-season setbacks, Oklahoma consistently rose to the occasion with poise and determination.
A standout throughout the season, senior pitcher Laney Marshall delivered some of the most memorable performances in recent program history. Meanwhile, freshman slugger Riley James emerged as a breakout star, fueling Oklahoma’s offense with timely hits and contagious energy. Gasso praised both the veterans and the newcomers for fostering a culture of accountability and joy.
“I’ve been coaching for a long time, and every season is different,” Gasso said. “But this team—there was something special about them. They loved each other, they loved the game, and they never backed down from anything.”
Though their season ended shy of the national title, the Sooners finished with an impressive 56–7 record, multiple All-American selections, and an enduring reputation for excellence. The team also earned praise for its sportsmanship and the strong leadership shown by its seniors.
Looking ahead, Gasso remains optimistic. “We’re losing some key pieces, but we’ve got a lot of talent returning. The foundation is strong,” she said. “This program is built on more than trophies—it’s built on character, and that’s what makes me proudest of all.”
Indeed, for Oklahoma softball, 2025 wasn’t just about the destination—it was
about the ride.
