The New York Yankees have been aiming to strengthen their infield for a while, a goal that dates back to the offseason. With the trade deadline approaching, general manager Brian Cashman is feeling the pressure to act.
There are several possible targets, but former GM Jim Bowden believes Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres would be the best fit. According to Bowden, the Yankees are looking for offensive upgrades over DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza, and Arraez could fill a need at either second or third base. He noted that Jazz Chisholm Jr. is open to switching positions, which could help the Yankees with flexibility.
While Arraez isn’t known for his defense, his bat is elite — he’s won a batting title in each of the past three seasons. His ability to get on base would provide more RBI opportunities for the Yankees’ power hitters, and his lefty swing would play well in Yankee Stadium, especially with the short porch in right field.
However, there are a few hurdles. Arraez’s weak defense has led the Padres to use him mostly at first base, and there are doubts about whether the Yankees and Padres match up well as trade partners. Bowden also pointed out that unless San Diego feels a long-term deal with Arraez is off the table, they may hesitate to move him — especially since they’re still chasing the Dodgers in the NL West.
Arraez would likely be a rental, and the Yankees may be reluctant to give up top prospects for a short-term addition. Still, if the Padres shift course before the July 31 deadline, the Yankees could find a way to bring Arraez to the Bronx, likely placing him at second base with Chisholm taking over third.
