Scheduling Conflicts Took Priority
Goode has been one of the busiest actors in the industry, and conflicting projects have repeatedly clashed with the Downton Abbey production schedule. During the second film, A New Era, he was filming The Offer, a Paramount+ series about the making of The Godfather. For the third and final movie, he was already committed to Netflix’s high-profile drama Department Q. With both projects overlapping the Downton Abbey shoot, his availability was severely limited.
A Knee Injury Complicated Matters
In addition to work conflicts, Goode also suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery and a lengthy recovery. The rehabilitation process made it physically difficult for him to commit to the rigorous filming schedule. Surprisingly, even if Goode had been able to appear, his character’s part in the script was described as extremely minimal — reportedly just half a page of dialogue. This left little room for Henry Talbot to make a meaningful impact on the story. Goode himself admitted that by this stage, Henry had become “a bit of a wet lettuce,” joking that the character had lost much of his dramatic spark.
Lady Mary’s Storyline Without Henry
Rather than quietly writing Henry off-screen, the filmmakers decided to address his absence with a dramatic plot turn: a divorce between Lady Mary and Henry Talbot. This narrative choice not only provides closure but also opens up new possibilities for Mary’s storyline, positioning her as a woman navigating independence, changing social structures, and personal reinvention.
No Hard Feelings from Goode
Despite stepping away, Goode has expressed no frustration or resentment. Instead, he has praised the franchise and accepted that both personal circumstances and creative direction made his absence a natural choice. Fans may be disappointed not to see Lady Mary and Henry together one last time, but the change ultimately shifts the spotlight back onto Mary’s resilience and leadership in the final chapter.
