Ford to Relocate World Headquarters After Nearly 70 Years
Ford Motor Company is preparing for one of the most significant transitions in its history: moving its world headquarters for the first time in nearly seven decades.
The automaker announced that it will shift its operations from the iconic “Glass House” at 1 American Road—its home since 1956—to a new 2.1 million-square-foot complex just three miles away. The new headquarters, part of the Henry Ford II World Center campus, will officially open in November 2025, though construction and development will continue through 2027.
The modern facility is designed to foster collaboration and innovation, bringing corporate leaders, design studios, and engineering teams together in a single hub. Ford says the campus will feature six design studios, over 300 tech-enabled meeting rooms, wellness and mother’s spaces, and a 160,000-square-foot food hall. About 14,000 employees will be within a 15-minute walk of the main building.
The move marks the end of an era for the Glass House, a building that has been central to Ford’s identity since the mid-20th century. Demolition of the site is expected to begin around 2027, though Ford has pledged to work with the city of Dearborn on redeveloping the property for future use.
Company officials say the relocation reflects Ford’s evolving focus on electric vehicles, software, and design-driven innovation, while also creating a workspace that supports the needs of a modern workforce.
“This is more than just a new headquarters—it’s an investment in the future of our people and our products,” a Ford spokesperson said.
For Dearborn residents and Ford’s workforce, the move represents both nostalgia and renewal: the closing of a historic chapter, and the beginning of one meant to keep the century-old automaker competitive in a rapidly changing industry.
