Social media has long been seen as a way for football stars to humanize themselves and communicate with fans – but it’s often not the footballers themselves who are behind it.
That performance was highlighted again on Saturday when Man United’s Marcus Rashford bid farewell to outgoing David de Gea. In a message clearly aimed at the management team, the striker’s Instagram account posted a photo of himself and the keeper with the words: “Caption ideas: you’ve been here since my breakthrough, good luck with your next step, brother.”
It’s not the first time Rashford, 25, has made such a mistake. He’s already posted a message on his own accounts which was obviously meant to be sent privately, but he’s certainly not the only footballer to have been caught either, as very few actually care about their own uploads.

Or so we thought. After Manchester City claimed a mouthwatering Champions League final with PSG in 2020/21, Foden’s Twitter account wrote: “@KMBappe are you ready?” and added a handshake emoji.
It turned out that Ten Toe, the company that manages his Twitter account, sent the message and the players and his representatives were outraged. The post was deleted and the company fired by Foden, but not before his more than 500,000 followers saw it.

The striker was an unused substitute when Sunderland lost to West Ham in late 2016, but he wanted fans to remain optimistic. Then he sent a message to his social media manager saying, “You can tweet something like … Amazing support yesterday and great effort from the guys! Hard to achieve result! But here we go again!”

Tottenham suffered a shock in March 2021 when they were knocked out by Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, but Joe Hart’s social media team clearly disagreed. Shortly after the 3-0 loss, Hart posted “Job done” alongside a Spurs graphic on his Instagram story.
He was later taken off and the goalkeeper apologized, saying: “Someone thought we won 3-0 last night. As sloppy as that sounds, it’s the truth. Posting ‘work done’ – this is unacceptable.”

Okay, after Joleon Lescott reacted to Liverpool’s 6-0 loss and a barrage of criticism by posting a photo of his beloved Mercedes, he didn’t go down the usual route of blaming his social media team. .
He kind of took responsibility, saying dubiously, “The tweet sent from my account with a picture of a car was completely random, it happened while driving and my phone was in my pocket.”

Further forward, football director John Murtough has been in extensive talks with Atalanta regarding the transfer of Rasmus Hojlund. The 20-year-old looks to be Ten Hag’s top target in the No.9 role, and personal terms are said to have already been agreed.
Ten Hag could well be open to adding a second forward to his squad, with the Dutchman keen to add more goals and ease the burden on Marcus Rashford. Although further additions in that area will likely rely on sales.
