Marcus Rashford drops awkward social media gaffe with parting message to David de Gea

Marcus Rashford joins four others in embarrassing faux pas in David de Gea’s farewell message

David de Gea confirmed on Saturday he was leaving Manchester United after 11 years at Old Trafford and was sent off uncomfortably by team-mate Marcus Rashford.

Rashford ‘turned off’ the TV after Man City won the Champions League

Social media has long been seen as a way for football stars to humanize themselves and communicate with fans – but it’s often not the footballers themselves who are behind it.

That performance was highlighted again on Saturday when Man United’s Marcus Rashford bid farewell to outgoing David de Gea. In a message clearly aimed at the management team, the striker’s Instagram account posted a photo of himself and the keeper with the words: “Caption ideas: you’ve been here since my breakthrough, good luck with your next step, brother.”

It’s not the first time Rashford, 25, has made such a mistake. He’s already posted a message on his own accounts which was obviously meant to be sent privately, but he’s certainly not the only footballer to have been caught either, as very few actually care about their own uploads.

Foden throws the gauntlet to Mbappe

Or so we thought. After Manchester City claimed a mouthwatering Champions League final with PSG in 2020/21, Foden’s Twitter account wrote: “@KMBappe are you ready?” and added a handshake emoji.

It turned out that Ten Toe, the company that manages his Twitter account, sent the message and the players and his representatives were outraged. The post was deleted and the company fired by Foden, but not before his more than 500,000 followers saw it.

Anichebe forgets she is logged in

The striker was an unused substitute when Sunderland lost to West Ham in late 2016, but he wanted fans to remain optimistic. Then he sent a message to his social media manager saying, “You can tweet something like … Amazing support yesterday and great effort from the guys! Hard to achieve result! But here we go again!”

Hart is not into it

Tottenham suffered a shock in March 2021 when they were knocked out by Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, but Joe Hart’s social media team clearly disagreed. Shortly after the 3-0 loss, Hart posted “Job done” alongside a Spurs graphic on his Instagram story.

He was later taken off and the goalkeeper apologized, saying: “Someone thought we won 3-0 last night. As sloppy as that sounds, it’s the truth. Posting ‘work done’ – this is unacceptable.”

Lescott’s car accident from a tweet

Okay, after Joleon Lescott reacted to Liverpool’s 6-0 loss and a barrage of criticism by posting a photo of his beloved Mercedes, he didn’t go down the usual route of blaming his social media team. .

He kind of took responsibility, saying dubiously, “The tweet sent from my account with a picture of a car was completely random, it happened while driving and my phone was in my pocket.”

Ok Joleon. ALL RIGHT.

The 27-year-old joined Inter last summer as the Italian side reached the Champions League final but suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Manchester City. But Onana has played under Ten Hag before at Dutch side Ajax and both parties will therefore of course be familiar with each other.

United are reportedly among the potential suitors for Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest.

Mundo Deportivo suggests he could make a cut-price move to the Premier League this summer, with Barcelona willing to accept just €17million.

Fulham and Crystal Palace have also been linked and look like the more obvious suitors, given United’s priorities lie elsewhere.

Ten Hag was keen on Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest last year but United’s failure to shift Wan-Bissaka – who was available for transfer all summer – blocked any move.

Harry Maguire set for United ‘showdown talks’

Harry Maguire could be the next high-profile United departure this summer.

Fabrizio Romano comments on his uncertain future and claims the club captain could be set to hold showdown talks to discuss his future.

“Another story we’re waiting for is Harry Maguire and his talks with Erik ten Hag, it will happen in the next days,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“At the moment I’m not aware of negotiations with West Ham, they are still busy with the midfielders situation as they have to replace Declan Rice. It’s not something imminent, at the moment, but I still think there are chances for Maguire to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Ten Hag wants to sign a second forward amid talks with Hojlund

Erik ten Hag’s preference is to sign another attacker as United hold discussions over Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Ten Hag wants an out-and-out striker and a forward who can play across the front three amid doubts over the futures of a number of United attackers.

Hojlund, 20, is United’s principal No.9 target after they were discouraged from bidding for Tottenham talisman Harry Kane and the club’s football director John Murtough has held extensive talks with Atalanta.

Dutch club ‘target’ Pellistri move with loan exit likely

Facundo Pellistri looks set to leave United on loan this summer.

Voetbal International say FC Twente are looking at a loan move for the Uruguay forward during the current window.

Erik ten Hag is a fond admirer of the 21-year-old, but he looks set to leave on loan to continue his development.

Pellistri could sign a new contract before he departs and is unlikely to be involved at first-team level next season given he would now need to be registered as an over-21 player.

United are still in talks over a possible deal to sign Rasmus Hojlund this summer.

Football Transfers says if negotiations drag on, Hojlund would be willing to make a transfer request to push a move through.

United positive about Andre Onana deal

Manchester United are optimistic about the prospect of signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to replace David de Gea.

Onana, 27, is United’s principal goalkeeping target and De Gea confirmed he has left the club for good on Saturday.

United sources insist no contract was ever formally offered to De Gea, 32, despite months of discussions. De Gea’s contract expired last week and United initially wanted to hold face-to-face discussions.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Friday United are at a more advanced stage to sign a new goalkeeper than a striker.
