Two young players have responded to Erik ten Haag’s challenge with excellent pre-season performances
Eric ten Haag is evaluating Manchester United’s youth team options during pre-season and considering adding the player to the first-team plan.
With four Academy players in the starting line-up against Leeds United on Wednesday, and Amado Diallo included, five starters ensure more opportunities in the seven games remaining until 2023/24. Alejandro Garnacho broke into the first team last season. The Argentina winger has scored five goals and provided numerous assists in 34 appearances for United. Developing him into a key member of the United squad is exactly what United are doing and Ten Haag believes pre-season is the perfect time for a young player to secure first-team status.
“Their time has come,” said the head of MUTV. “We need to strengthen the team and with transfers and Academy players we can do that. Manchester United are known for bringing young boys into the first team.”
Heading into next season, Ten Hag also explained that he hopes to bring at least one young talent into the squad each season. “Last year Garnacho did it. I hope to have at least one player join the team, get playing time and even fight for a spot in the starting lineup,” he added.
Interestingly enough, there are two players who deserve to be in the first team next season.
Coby Mainu and Amado Diallo are both very talented youngsters who play in different positions but could be playing between the two joining the Ten Haag team next season. do not have. United are looking for more depth in midfield and on the right flank, which suits both of them. The 21-year-old Amado made a strong impression at Sunderland, while Mainu remained at United on loan last season and is well-regarded at the club. Both players scored in the first 45 minutes of United’s 2-0 win over Leeds before ten Haag made a number of substitutions at half-time.
Mainu played first-class in midfield, but Amado was dangerous on the right and deservedly assisted a low cross to Hannibal Mabry. However, Noam Emmeran, who was brought in as a substitute, also performed well, scoring goals and helping to build his second-half fame, but fell just short of a first-team spot.
With the Old Trafford manager considering leaving the academy to join the first team next season, Amado and Mainu are off to a great start in the manager’s spotlight.
