Former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke has questioned the decision to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan, saying former goalkeeper David de Gea is better and his departure ‘will come down to Man United’ .
De Gea is currently a free agent having left Old Trafford when his contract expired and manager Erik ten Hag opted to replace him with Onana. Ten Hag made the decision based on Onana’s ability to get the ball at his feet, but Yorke wondered why he hadn’t given Academy graduate Dean Henderson the chance instead.
“It’s crazy that Chelsea had Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga and still want another goalkeeper,” Yorke told OLBG. “We should have let Andre Onana go to Chelsea and Man United should have kept David de Gea and promoted Dean Henderson instead.” “These managers forget about young players, they have to give them a chance. If you don’t put in goal someone who is presumably England’s next big thing when he’s waiting in the wings, when will he be promoted?”
“If it was someone like Marcus Rashford and you kept him under 23, how would you know he would have been as amazing as him? If De Gea is the problem, then we should have promoted Henderson.
“He went and gained valuable experience at Nottingham Forest, enough to make him a regular and De Gea would take on a more variable role. I’m not going to sit here and say Onana is 100% better than De Gea. I think back to when I was a young player trying to get into the team.
“If I was loaned out to gain experience and worked hard but still didn’t get promoted, I would be frustrated. Onana will probably have to adapt to Manchester, the weather and more when you could have given the young player who has already adapted a chance.
Yorke then warned United that they ‘have to be careful what they wish for’ following De Gea’s departure, saying ‘Onana is not as good’ as the Spaniard. He added: “I’ve said before that Man United have to be careful what they want with the loss of David de Gea.” Former United star Dwight Yorke has criticized the decision to replace David de Gea with Onana.

“Despite all the good things De Gea did for Man United, the end of his career was really bad. I hope this doesn’t happen again at Man United after he bought Andre Onana. Be careful what you wish for .” “De Gea is the Golden Glove winner, a high profile player who has made mistakes just like all of us. De Gea winning the Golden Glove is like winning the Golden Boot and being the club’s top scorer, but being replaced by the team of football .
“This doesn’t resonate well with me. In my opinion Onana is not as good as De Gea and people need to watch him very closely. I’ve seen Onana before, the Premier League is a different cauldron with how fast the game is and how often you are under pressure.
“Onana sometimes tries to be an outfield player instead of a goalkeeper. I will be watching this guy very closely and the people who criticized De Gea and wanted him gone will probably be the ones asking him to come back. I hope that doesn’t happen for the sake of Man United.
