Mason Greenwood is training with the same manager as a former Manchester United player and current star ahead of his potential return to football.
Ben Mangan worked with Greenwood, against whom charges of attempted rape, control and coercion and assault with actual assault were dropped by prosecutors in February. The 21-year-old has yet to return to United, where an internal investigation was underway before deciding on his future.
Greenwood, who last played for the Red Devils in January 2022 and still has two years left on his contract, is keeping fit by training with Mangan. The manager has also worked with United Academy star Kobbie Mainoo, who has recently impressed in pre-season, and winger Anthony Elanga, who left the club for £15million for Premier League rivals. Nottingham Forest last month. Greenwood, as first reported by The Sun, practiced in private sessions with Mangan. He did it again last Tuesday, with Greenwood’s father and personal manager, Andrew, holding his newborn granddaughter.
The Red Devils, who will face protests from fans if they decide to reinstate him, are said to have established Greenwood’s training schedule and are monitoring his progress. Mangan is involved and describes himself on his Instagram page as a “one-man professional football manager”, specializing in attacking plays and goals.
Mangan charges between £105 and £150 for his 75-minute sessions which Mainoo and Elanga have undertaken. Greenwood recently trained alongside Elanga in Dubai, with Udinese defender James Abankwah.
Greenwood, who previously played for England, is awaiting the green light to return to professional football, although he may not come from United. Club bosses are still deciding his fate. United originally wanted to make a decision before the start of the new season, but with members of their women’s squad still at the Women’s World Cup in Australia, they delayed announcing their decision.
Old Trafford officials are continuing to consult with key stakeholders and want their women’s team players to be involved in the process. Mason Greenwood has not played for Manchester United since January 2022
United manager Erik ten Hag was recently asked to provide an update on Greenwood but was left dumbstruck at the situation.
“It’s the club’s decision,” confirmed Ten Hag. “Obviously I said my ideas and opinions, but it’s the club’s decision. We all have to accept it. I can’t say much about it, but what I’m saying is that I shared my opinion about it, so let’s see what’s there in the hand is happening and what will be the decision”.
Greenwood’s number 11 shirt has not been included in United’s provisional squad numbers ahead of the new season, which starts at Wolves on Monday. The club noted: “Others will start the season with existing numbers, but with the option to change after the transfer window closes, when it will be clear which other squad numbers are vacant.”
