Manchester United will begin their defence of the Carabao Cup trophy against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag won the League Cup in his first season in charge thanks to a 2-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley in February and the Dutchman will be keen to start the new campaign in the cup competition with a home victory.

United bounced back from a poor run of defeats with a gutsy 1-0 win against Burnley at the weekend and Wednesday night’s game against Crystal Palace represents an opportunity for back-to-back victories in quick succession.

Regarding team news for the game, Lisandro Martinez could be absent again after missing the clash at Turf Moor through injury, but Mason Mount might return to the squad after recovering from his hamstring problem.

Harry Maguire was another absentee against Burnley but it’s possible he could make his first start of the season.

Our writers have had their say on how United should line up against Palace…

The dilemma United have is in defence as they lack senior and specialist cover at full-back. The more important game against Crystal Palace this week is on Saturday and that has to be considered with the line-up tonight. If Sergio Reguilon is still unwell, then Diogo Dalot should switch to left-back with Victor Lindelof at right-back.

Tom Heaton is not the number two goalie but he is probably the second-best ‘keeper at United, though Altay Bayindir will likely start. Harry Maguire might as well play as he is not going to get picked in any of the Premier League or Champions League games.

Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount need run-outs ahead of more testing matches before the October internationals. Bruno Fernandes is a tireless performer and United could do with some seniority and continuity amid changes up top. Alejandro Garnacho has to come in.

Although these kinds of games are ideal for rotation, the squad is thin and Ten Hag prefers to play his strongest team available, but there are still a few changes that should be made after the 1-0 win against Burnley at the weekend.

If Maguire is fit, he should make his first start of the campaign and it would be great to have Reguilon, who was sick in the build-up to play Burnley and who looked to sustain a knock in the game, from the first whistle.

Bayindir and Amrabat should be given their full debuts and it seems worth experimenting with Mount on the right wing, provided he’s fit. Martial and Garnacho should make up the remaining attacking positions.

Though against a Premier League side, Erik ten Hag must take the Carabao Cup match as an opportunity to rotate his side as much as possible. Injuries still leave the options perilously low but it’s important as many of the important players as possible are rested ahead of some crucial games in the Premier and Champions Leagues.
As a result, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro and Andre Onana should be given the night off. Alejandro Garnacho can return to the fold on the left while Hannibal Mejbri continues his role in midfield.
Dan’s team
Facundo Pellistri should be given another chance to show his quality from the right with Anthony Martial coming in up front. Injuries at the back mean there’s less room for rotation. Diogo Dalot, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof should all start.
The match also gives a chance for those returning from the treatment table to get some much-needed minutes under their belts so Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Raphael Varane should all start.
