Harry Kane knows Manchester United have enough talent to “get back to their best” despite a difficult start to the season and Wednesday’s defeat at Bayern Munich.
Kane came out on the winning side in his first Champions League game for the German side, finding himself on the scoresheet against a United side who wanted to sign him in the summer. The 30-year-old arrowed home a penalty for his side’s third goal in a chaotic 4-3 win after Christian Eriksen was penalised for handball.
United started with intent but conceded twice inside four minutes, with Andre Onana allowing a weak Leroy Sane shot to go through him before Serge Gnabry doubled the home side’s lead not long after. Rasmus Hojlund pulled one back for the Reds but Kane replied instantly from the spot
Casemiro scored twice in the final minutes, but United conceded again in between with Mathys Tel unmarked in the box and able to fire home. It’s a third straight defeat for Erik ten Hag’s side in all competitions but Kane expects them to improve.
“They’re obviously going through a difficult spell, suffering with some injuries as well,” Kane told TNT Sports after full-time. “They’re a team with a lot of talent, which you saw in the last five minutes. They can score goals and turn games around really quickly.
“But overall, I’m not too worried about them, I’m more focused on myself. I’m sure they’ll improve and get back to their best but I’m just concerned about us here in Germany and I’m enjoying it so far.”
Despite being second-best for at least two-thirds of the game, United kept Bayern on their toes with a string of late chances. Casemiro finished well after a scruffy moment in the box and the Brazilian glanced home Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick to get United within a goal of a surprise point.
“I think a bit crazy, to be honest,” Kane added of the match. “For the majority of the game we controlled it.
“We went 3-1 ahead and just lost a bit of concentration in the last five minutes. Thankfully we were able to hold on to the lead. Overall, a really good start to the campaign against a tough opponent.”
