Man Utd player ratings vs Galatasaray: One ‘sensational’ 9/10 but two earn 4/10 in 3-2 loss – gallery

Manchester United suffered another Old Trafford defeat, as Casemiro saw red in the Champions League.

Manchester United suffered yet another disappointing night at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s side were beaten 3-2 in the Champions League by Galatasaray.

For long periods of the encounter, the hosts were the better side, but a 10-minute spell in the latter stages of the second half saw United concede two and reduced to 10 men, which cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s earlier brace.

It took less than two minutes for United to create the first opening of the night when Bruno Fernandes, playing right wing, failed to make significant contact with a powerful Hojlund cross.

Yet it wasn’t long until the young Dane nodded the ball home from a similar cross. Casemiro’s sweeping pass to the wide areas picked out Rashford, who, after advancing down the line, swung a well-timed ball into the back post that picked out Hojlund.

The lead didn’t last long, however, with ex-United man Wilfried Zaha netting an equaliser on 23 minutes. Diogo Dalot’s error provided the chance as the Portugal defender got caught under the flight of a long, downfield pass. As he grappled with Zaha, the ball sprung up invitingly for the Galatasaray forward, who saw his effort deflect off Dalot and into the goal.

From there, United were the better side and Casemiro saw his shot deflect wide from outside the area, while Mason Mount twice was frustrated that close-range efforts were deflected wide. As for the visitors, Kerem Akturkoglu was perhaps their most dangerous outlet and he went close twice either side of the break, with Andre Onana saving the first before a second was blocked well by Victor Lindelof.

In the early stages of the second period, United’s attempts to grab a second intensified, with Fernandes curling a shot wide, before Mason Mount had a strike tipped over the bar by Fernando Muslera. Rashford should have handed United the advantage as he was sent clear on goal, yet he made the wrong choice to play in Fernandes rather than shoot, and his attempted pass was intercepted.

Just before the hour mark, Hojlund found the back of the net after skipping past Sacha Boey and firing past Muslera, but a quick VAR check showed the United striker was clearly offside. United continued to push with a Rashford header and a Fernandes volley testing the Galatasaray stopper, before Mount fired wide with his left.

Yet it was a defensive mistake from the opposition that handed the Red Devils a second lead of the night, with Davinson Sanchez’s slip presenting Hojlund with the ball inside the United half. The ex-Copenhagen man raced towards the goal and then delicately chipped the ball into the back of the net.

But once again it didn’t last long and, minutes after Akturkoglu shot wide, the Turkish star excellently placed a first-time finish past Onana following a Galatasaray counter attack. The goal seemed to shake United, with Casemiro receiving a second booking of the night in the 77th minute for a senseless tackle on Dries Mertens inside the box.

Moments after Casemiro trudged off the pitch, Mauro Icardi stood up and placed the ball on the spot, but he fired his penalty well wide, to the delight of the majority inside Old Trafford. Those cheers turned almost immediately to groans though, as Icardi, played onside by Sofyan Amrabat, retrieved a long ball in behind and then delicately dinked it over the onrushing Onana.

As the game ticked into the latter stages, a Fernandes free-kick that deflected wide was the best United could muster, with Galatasary going close through Boey, and then Icardi again.

In injury-time, Anthony Martial curled an effort towards goal that was swotted away by Muslera, although the offside flag was subsequently raised, on United’s final chance of the night. Here’s how we rated the players…
