Manchester United will be hoping to build on their dramatic 2-1 win over Brentford when they resume their Premier League campaign against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening.
United signed off for the international break in dramatic fashion, scoring two stoppage-time goals against the Bees – both through Scott McTominay – to secure a much-needed three points. The defeat was marred, though, by another suspected injury concern, this time to Victor Lindelof.
The Swede, who started at left-back, was forced off after 71 minutes, generating further concern for boss Erik ten Hag. Fortunately, he started Sweden’s abandoned clash with Belgium on Monday night, suggesting that his injury is not as bad as first feared.
The same, too, can be said for Casemiro, who started Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in 2026 World Cup qualifying in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He played the full 90 minutes, just days after suffering an ankle injury in a 1-1 draw against Venezuela, meaning he could also be fit to face the Blades at the weekend.
With all of that in mind, MEN Sport, ahead of United’s campaign getting back underway, has taken a close look at the latest on the injury front with a detailed round-up.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Wan-Bissaka has missed each of United’s last six matches with a hamstring injury, last appearing as a late substitute in the 3-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last month. He was omitted from the starting line-up that day because of illness and got injured during his cameo role.
Possible return date: October/November.
Raphael Varane
The Frenchman was absent for the third time in the last five Premier League matches against Brentford, missing out because of a “minor issue”, according to club sources. Ten Hag indicated that it was nothing serious, meaning he should be available this weekend.
Possible return date: October 21 vs Sheffield United.
Lisandro Martinez
Unlike his centre-back partner, Martinez is a long-term absentee. The Argentine has suffered a recurrence of the foot injury that sidelined him earlier this year and it is possible that, in the worst case scenario, he will not play again this calendar year.
If his recovery goes according to plan, though, he could be back before the end of 2023 and feature in the busy Christmas period.
Possible return date: December 2023/January 2024.
Victor Lindelof
As outlined above, Lindelof was forced off in the second half against Brentford, but featured in Sweden’s clash with Belgium earlier this week, playing the first half ahead of it being abandoned at the interval because of a major incident. His inclusion suggests he will feature this weekend.
Possible return date: October 21 vs Sheffield United.
Luke Shaw
The England international, who played a key role in United’s success last season, has been sidelined since late-August with a muscle injury. The Reds, at the time, confirmed that he was set to miss “a number of weeks”. Ten Hag may provide an update on his recovery when he speaks to the media later this week.
Possible return date: October/November.
Tyrell Malacia
Fellow left-back Malacia has not kicked a ball for United since May 28, missing the start of this season and the whole of pre-season. The Manchester Evening News understands Malacia sustained the knee injury last season and the club initially looked to manage it with pain injections, but surgery was eventually required.
It’s understood the player was on crutches after the injury and he spent some time in the Netherlands to recover. He’s now back in Manchester and sources have indicated he’s expected to return before the New Year.
Possible return date: December 2023 / January 2024.
Sergio Reguilon
The on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender has missed each of United’s last four matches due to a mixture of illness and injury. He missed the win over Brentford with a muscle problem, with Ten Hag confirming he was not strong enough to feature against the Londoners.
Ten Hag will likely give an update on his condition later this week.
Possible return date: October 21 vs Sheffield United.
Casemiro
After being taken off against Venezuela last week, it was feared that Casemiro could be the latest United player to join the injury list. However, he was deemed strong enough to start the defeat to Uruguay and he came through it unsc
Possible return date: October 21 vs Sheffield United.
Kobbie Mainoo
The eagerly anticipated return of academy star Mainoo might not be too far away. After suffering an ankle injury in pre-season, he has been building up his fitness at Carrington in recent weeks, so much so that he was spotted participating in team training ahead of the Champions League defeat to Galatasaray earlier this month.
Though Ten Hag could issue a concrete update on him later this week, it is possible, after a couple more weeks’ worth of training, that he could make the squad this weekend.
Possible return date: October 21 vs Sheffield United.
Amad
The Ivorian international has been sidelined since July with a knee injury. He has been working hard on his recovery, recently sharing positive updates on social media, hinting that a return might not be too far away.
Possible return date: Unknown.
