Liverpool were urged to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 – just months before Manchester United broke the bank to land him.

The England international, 23, is expected to leave Old Trafford in January after a public spat with Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils boss dropped Sancho in September after accusing him of training poorly – with the winger hitting back at his manager on social media.

Ten Hag was angered by Sancho’s response and is now refusing to play him. Sancho has struggled since his £73million switch from Germany, scoring just nine goals and providing six assists in 58 Premier League games to drop out of the England squad.

With his career stalling, it seems Sancho joined the wrong club back in the summer of 2021. Liverpool were linked with the player before his move to Old Trafford, with one of their former stars telling Jurgen Klopp to make Dortmund an irresistible offer.

Fabio Borini – who was Brendan Rodgers ‘ first signing as Liverpool boss back in July 2012 – told Klopp to swoop for Sancho in April 2021. The Englishman was an exciting prospect after scoring 38 goals and providing 51 assists in 104 Bundesliga games for Dortmund.

“Looking at Liverpool’s competitors I think more depth in the attacking positions would do the team good,” Borini told Caught Offside. “Jadon Sancho would be a great signing and it would be fun to steal him from Manchester United.”

Sancho’s move to Merseyside never materialised, but could it be back on the cards in January? It seems unlikely that United would sell the £73m man to their biggest rivals, but the row between Sancho and Ten Hag, that started after United’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the beginning of September, shows no sign of stopping.

“Jadon, on his performances in training we did not select him,” Ten Hag told reporters. “You have to reach a level every day at Manchester United and we can make choices in the front line. So for this game he was not selected.”

Sancho immediately hit back on social media. He wrote: “Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that (are) completely untrue. I have conducted myself in training very well this week. I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I have been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!

“All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team. I respect all decisions that are made by the coaching staff, I play with fantastic players and [I’m] grateful to do so which I know every week is a challenge. I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!”

His future looks set to be away from Old Trafford if United can find someone to take him off their hands at the start of 2024.
