Manchester United will pay tribute to the late great Sir Bobby Charlton ahead of their Champions League clash with Copenhagen.
Tuesday’s match marks their first home game since Charlton passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday following a battle with dementia which began in 2020. That evening, United secured a narrow 2-1 win away to struggling Sheffield United and now hope to make it three successive victories against Copenhagen, with the Red Devils yet to pick up a point in Group A.
Meanwhile, INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe is closing in on a £1.4billion deal to buy a 25 percent stake in the club, handing him control of football operations. Paul Mitchell is being eyed to become United’s first ever sporting director, although the Red Devils face competition for his signature.
Stay tuned as we bring you build-up to the match, the latest takeover news and much more from Old Trafford…

Man Utd v Copenhagen talking points
It was a special night at Old Trafford for Manchester United – but not just because of what transpired on the pitch.
The moving scenes before kick-off as players, fans, and coaches honoured the memory of Sir Bobby Charlton seemingly set the stage for a memorable occasion against Copenhagen. Instead, Erik ten Hag’s men struggled to impose themselves, and the 0-0 scoreline after 72 minutes could have been worse had away striker Cupido Goncalves not hit the woodwork, while Lukas Lerager was brilliantly denied by Andre Onana.
But cometh the moment, cometh Harry Maguire. With time running out, he got on the end of a sublime cross from Christian Eriksen to head high into the net and keep the Red Devils alive in the race to qualify for the knockout stages, with Onana then superbly saving Jordan Larsson’s last gasp penalty to win it.
Mirror Football reviews the five main talking points from Old Trafford….

Maguire dedicates win to Sir Bobby
Harry Maguire has dedicated Manchester United’s win over FC Copenhagen to Sir Bobby Charlton.
Charlton sadly passed away on Saturday at the age of 86 and United paid tribute to him prior to Tuesday night’s match.
Speaking after the final whistle, Maguire, who scored the winning goal, said: “It’s one of those nights where it’s just meant to be. We were meant to win that game. That’s the win we wanted to dedicate to Sir Bobby, his family as well.
“It’s been a tough week for us, going to Sheffield United and coming away with three points isn’t easy and then the news about him passing, it affects everyone at the club, everyone in the dressing room. We’re really going to miss him and I’m happy we could get this win for him.”

Ratcliffe takeover fears eased
The creditors at INEOS Group have been reassured that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into Manchester United will be taken from his personal wealth and not the company.
Ratcliffe has been left as the only individual left in the running to invest in the Premier League giants after Sheikh Jassim withdrew from the race to take over United. INEOS founder and chief executive Ratcliffe becomes a minority investor in the club – as soon as his £1.4billion deal to purchase 25 per cent of United is complete.
This is a somewhat convoluted deal in that Ratcliffe would become the largest individual stakeholder at Old Trafford, where he would take the lead on sporting matters at the club. However, he would still hold just a quarter of the club – although there is a longer-term view to buying more shares.

Ten Hag gets Mainoo boost
Erik ten Hag could soon be welcoming Kobbie Mainoo back into the first-team fold after the youngster made his long-awaited return to action on Tuesday.
Mainoo started for the Under 19s side in their UEFA Youth League clash with Copenhagen at Leigh Sports Village. The hosts were beaten 1-0, but Ten Hag would have been heartened to see the 18-year-old midfielder come through unscathed.
Indeed, the game represented his first competitive minutes of any kind this season, despite his strong pre-season that left many fans tipping him to become a regular fixture in the Premier League in 2023/24. But his impressive summer was soured when he limped off early in the friendly game with Real Madrid with an ankle injury.

Keys hits out at takeover plan
Richard Keys has described Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Manchester United takeover as a “mess” – after concerns were raised over where his money is coming from.
INEOS chief Ratcliffe is set to buy a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils after holding off competition from Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. The billionaire’s deal means the Glazers will remain in charge at Old Trafford… for the time being at least.
It’s claimed Ratcliffe is using loans from two banks, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, to fund his United takeover. This has worried fans, who were angered by the Glazers buying the club with leveraged debt back in 2005. Those debts still hang over the club.

ICYMI: Van der Gaag set to stay
Ajax are likely to fail if they attempt to lure Erik ten Hag’s No.2, Mitchell van der Gaag, back to Amsterdam.
The Daily Mail claim that former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, now working for Ajax in a consultancy role, has identified Van der Gaag as a candidate to replace Maurice Steijn, who left via mutual consent on Sunday.
Ten Hag is desperate to keep his right-hand man, however, and the report adds that Ajax are expected to fail if an approach is made.

Dalot setting out stall for Europe
Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is chasing another three points – this time in Europe – after his weekend winner.
“I’m excited. I think we feel confident that we have a good chance to get the three points that will build us some momentum to go into the next games,” the full-back told club media.
“Obviously, we want to go through this competition, we want to go through the group stage and we have to win games, and this will be a good opportunity for us to do it.
“[The atmosphere] will give us a lot of strength, I’m sure. I think that these fans are known for that, as giving us the power sometimes when things are not going so well, to put us back on track and get us standing again and facing the challenge that we have during the game.
“And I think it will be a great atmosphere for us to play with, on a fantastic European evening. I think that’s what the fans love as well and hopefully we can all together, all combined, we can win the game.”

Ratcliffe’s post-investment plans
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in Manchester United is likely to see Jean-Claude Blanc hold ‘the primary influence over sporting strategy’, according to The Independent.

Further appointments are expected to follow, though the same report indicates manager Erik ten Hag isn’t at risk.

Sergio Reguilon is pushing for a return after injury and illness, and could replace makeshift left-back Victor Lindelof to allow the Swede to move back into the middle.

Ten Hag confident Hojlund and Martial can play together
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted summer signing Rasmus Hojlund could soon be deployed in an attack that also contains Anthony Martial.
Ever since Hojlund arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £72million from Atalanta in the summer, he has been the preferred candidate to lead the line when fit. In stark contrast, Martial is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the league for United so far this season, with his longest outing coming in the form of his 67 minute appearance during the 3-1 defeat by Arsenal back in September.
It therefore comes as little surprise to learn that the Frenchman has just one goal to his name so far this season – a Carabao Cup strike at home against Crystal Palace. Hojlund, however, has three – all of which have come in the Champions League.

Happy birthday, Rooney
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney turns 39 today!
United’s all-time record goalscorer took charge of his first game as Birmingham City manager on Saturday, losing 1-0 to former teammate Michael Carrick and his Middlesbrough side.
Liverpool urged to sign United target
John Aldridge has urged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to go out and sign Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite – who’s been linked with a move to Manchester United.
The 21-year-old impressed for Sean Dyche’s side in the Merseyside derby on Saturday, though he did come out on the losing side in controversial circumstances. Mohamed Salah scored twice late on to beat the 10-man Toffees at Anfield, but Everton were insistent that Ibrahima Konate should have received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Beto. This was after Ashley Young was sent off for a similar offence.
But, having played with one less player for more than a half of football, there were many positives Everton can take from the match. One of them was Branthwaite, who put in an assured performance for the Toffees. The defender, who spent last season on loan at PSV, has cemented himself in the XI after sitting out the first two matches.

ICYMI: Sancho leaning towards European destination
Jadon Sancho is more likely to join a European club in the January transfer window than remain in England, having come to the conclusion that his future lies away from Manchester United.
According to Sky Germany, both Barcelona or former club Borussia Dortmund wouldn’t facilitate a move, but Italian giants Juventus are keen on a loan
Keys questions Ratcliffe’s takeover ploy
Richard Keys has described Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Manchester United takeover as a “mess” – after concerns were raised over where his money is coming from.
INEOS chief Ratcliffe is set to buy a 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils after holding off competition from Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. The billionaire’s deal means the Glazers will remain in charge at Old Trafford… for the time being at least.

Neville’s poignant tribute to Charlton
Manchester United have shared a handwritten message from Gary Neville paying tribute to “the greatest English footballer” Sir Bobby Charlton after the World Cup winner’s death.
Charlton, who won the World Cup with England in 1966 and the European Cup with United two years later, passed away on Saturday at the age of 86. United have opened up a book of condolences for fans to pay their respects, with Neville among the former players to do so.
A minute’s silence is due to be held for Charlton before United take on FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Additionally, a wreath will be placed on Charlton’s seat in the directors’ box and players and club staff will don black armbands for a player who Neville praised highly in his moving message.
Hojlund’s brotherly love to be put aside
It’s game that Manchester United and Rasmus Hojlund dare not lose – and the Danish striker won’t just be motivated by the prospect of keeping his team’s Champions League hopes alive.
Erik ten Hag’s side are staring down the barrel of a group stage exit after their 4-3 loss in Bayern Munich was followed by an arguably more damaging 3-2 home defeat by Galatasaray. Hojlund was on the scoresheet in both those fixtures, showing flashes of the potential that persuaded Ten Hag to pay Atalanta £72million for his services.
And United’s European fate could well now be decided by Hojlund, but not necessarily the one in red. Twin brothers Oscar and Emil will be travelling to Manchester this week with the Danish Superliga champions, with family bragging rights as well as vital points up for grabs for the siblings.
ICYMI: De Gea reunites with teammates amid return suggestions
David de Gea has been pictured with his “brothers” at Manchester United – as speculation over a potential return continues to grow.
De Gea, 32, was released by United in July after 11 years at Old Trafford. The decision to axe the Spaniard was controversial, as his replacement Andre Onana is struggling to live up to his billing. The 27-year-old goalkeeper arrived from Inter Milan in a £47million deal.
Onana has kept two clean sheets and conceded 13 goals in nine Premier League games since his transfer. The former Ajax stopper has also struggled in the Champions League, conceding seven goals in just two games and making a howler against Bayern Munich.
Many fans would like to see De Gea, who is still a free agent, return to Erik ten Hag’s squad sooner rather than later. He’s done little to quash that speculation by going for a coffee with four of United’s current stars, including captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fletcher’s son switches back to Scotland
Darren Fletcher’s son Tyler has switched his international allegiance back to Scotland after representing England.
The 16-year-old midfielder, who joined Manchester United’s academy from Manchester City in August, has represented both Scotland and England at under-16 level since making his international debut last year. He helped England win the Montaigu Tournament in April.
Yet Tyler appears to be edging towards a career with Scotland after featuring for their U17s against Belarus in a Euros qualifier on Saturday. Tyler’s twin brother Jack has also represented both England and Scotland but didn’t feature against Belarus.
Jack, who was also part of England’s victorious Montaigu Tournament squad, could still pledge his allegiance to Scotland too. Yet there’s no question marks over Darren’s allegiance, as the United legend is a former Scotland captain with 80 caps to his name.
Ten Hag hopes for Reguilon return
Erik ten Hag is hoping that left-back Sergio Reguilon will be available for selection tonight against Copenhagen.
The Manchester United boss explained during his pre-match press conference yesterday: “Sergio, he got ill for Saturday but he was fit, he trained all week last week.
“Yesterday he was, for a part, back in training, today he will train and we have to assess if he is ready and game fit if he can be involved in the squad. We have to wait for that.”
Ferdinand tells United players told how to protect Onana
Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United’s senior defenders will be responsible for helping Andre Onana out of his early slump at Old Trafford.
The former centre-back was marshalling United’s defence when a young David de Gea arrived in 2011. Much like Onana, the former Spain international did not settle in immediately and the key, Ferdinand says from that experience, is for team-mates to make new goalkeepers feel appreciated and ease off the criticism when mistakes occur.
Onana, 27, is already under pressure following a couple of costly moments having arrived from Inter Milan as De Gea’s replacement. Ferdinand said: “Those moments are about the experienced players making the new ones more confident.
“When they make a good save it’s about reassuring them, when they make a mistake it’s about not berating them. There will be times when you have to berate someone like that but when you know someone was young and fragile, like David was, you’ve got to be clever around those situations.”
Sancho planning for January exit
Jadon Sancho is expecting to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window and it’s more likely that he’ll move abroad than stay in England.
According to Sky Germany, Juventus are keen to sign the 23-year-old winger on loan, with a move to Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund currently ruled unrealistic.
Sancho hasn’t featured for United since August because of a high-profile fallout with Erik ten Hag.

FULL STORY: Malacia back in training
Tyrell Malacia has finally returned to training – but the left-back is still a while away from making his Premier League comeback.
Malacia, 24, hasn’t played for Manchester United this season after suffering a knee injury. That has left Erik ten Hag short at left-back, with Luke Shaw also picking up a problem. Loan stars Sergio Reguilion and Sofyan Amrabat have tried to fill the void.
United were initially unsure how to treat Malacia’s injury. It’s believed they used injections to ease the pain but eventually decided surgery was the best course of action. The Netherlands international now has a return to full first-team training in his sights.
Malacia visited United’s Carrington training ground on Monday to do some light ball work away from the main group. Players often return to light training when they are within a month of making their comeback, which will be music to Ten Hag’s ears.

Last XI to face Copenhagen in 2020
Just over three years ago, Manchester United needed an extra-time penalty to defeat Copenhagen in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Boss Erik ten Hag will be hoping for a much smoother night on Tuesday when the Red Devils host the Danish giants at Old Trafford. United are desperate for a positive result as they sit rock bottom of their Champions League group after two defeats in their opening two games.
They have a prime chance to do that against Copenhagen, who have registered just one point so far. The visitors will be looking to replicate their performance from that quarter-final in Cologne in August 2020.

Malacia back in training
Tyrell Malacia has returned to training having yet to make an appearance for Manchester United this season.
The left-back, 24, has so far been sidelined with a knee injury which required surgery.
Malacia is now doing light work on the grass at Carrington, with a view to joining his teammates over the next few weeks.
Ferdinand calls for perspective
Manchester United are not on the course they were expected to take before the season started but Rio Ferdinand says it is far too early to write off the campaign.
Erik ten Hag’s side face a crunch clash against Copenhagen on Tuesday evening knowing that another Old Trafford defeat would spell the end of their hopes in the Champions League. But having finally put consecutive league wins together, Ferdinand believes the Dutch head coach will understand the gravity of their situation.
“When the season started there were some positives and optimism around the place. Then the season started and recruitment fell away a bit and you look at the performances and results,” Ferdinand said, on behalf of TNT Sports.
“Man United, any story becomes massive news around the place and hysteria follows. That was it for a month or so when the season started. The past couple of games they’ve picked up a few points now which is positive.”
United to remember Sir Bobby
A minute’s silence will be held prior to Manchester United’s game against Copenhagen tonight in remembrance of Sir Bobby Charlton.
The club have also confirmed that a wreath will be in place on Charlton’s seat in the Old Trafford director’s box, while players and staff will wear black armbands.
At the pre-match press conference yesterday, Erik ten Hag and Diogo Dalot let a minute’s silence.
He’ll also be commemorated on the match programme and there will be further tributes ahead of Sunday’s Manchester Derby.
We’ll be bringing you build-up to tonight’s huge Champions League clash with Copenhagen as well as more tributes to Sir Bobby Charlton and the latest on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.4billion deal to buy 25 percent of the club.

Let us know your thoughts!
How do you think Manchester United’s season is going?
Sevilla are monitoring the future of Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri – who has been in Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad this campaign.
Hannibal spent last season in the Championship at Birmingham, where he netted once across 41 appearances – of which 23 were from the start.
Now aged 20, he is in high demand but has remained at United, who have resisted offers of a permanent sale.
Borussia Dortmund had been eyeing a deal for the midfielder in the summer and Besiktas offered a loan deal with an option to buy the player which was knocked back by the Red Devils.
Ten Hag was adamant that the midfielder was part of his first-team plans.

Redknapp’s Maguire verdict
Jamie Redknapp has urged Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United despite his impressive display against Sheffield United.
Maguire, 30, has struggled for minutes at Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag’s appointment in May 2022 and was stripped of the captaincy during the summer. Yet he responded to his critics by putting in a man of the match display against Sheffield United on Saturday.
The Red Devils defeated the Blades 2-1 at Bramall Lane thanks to Diogo Dalot’s late winner. Scott McTominay opened the scoring for the visitors before Oli McBurnie equalised to leave the game in the balance.
Maguire has faced plenty of criticism during the last couple of years. Sky Sports pundit Redknapp has defended the England international – insisting he’s been “treated disgracefully” by fans – but doesn’t believe he has a long-term future at Old Trafford.
