Erik ten Hag explains why Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof start in the Manchester derby.

Erik ten Hag provides shock reasoning why Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof start in Manchester derby

Both Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof start for Manchester United in their clash against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

It is a decision from Erik ten Hag that shocked many supporters, who expected Sergio Reguilon and Raphael Varane to be stationed in the defence.

Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot have been in decent form, but Evans and Lindelof appear to be weak links in the backline against a super-strong Man City attacking side.

However, whilst many believed that Ten Hag was forced into these changes through injury, Ten Hag has stated that it is a tactical decision for the game.

When asked by club media about the inclusion of the two defenders, Ten Hag said: “It’s tactical. It’s not the argument to make their selection [their experience], it’s tactical and that’s the answer.”

The manager went onto talk about Christian Eriksen, who is starting after impressing from the bench in recent games.

“You always think he can be decisive in his distribution,” added the manager. “His calmness on the ball, he gives options to players. I think that’s what you need against a good side like City, who will press very strongly.”

Another midfielder in the squad is teenager Kobbie Mainoo, who recently returned from injury.

Ten Hag has strongly suggested that Mainoo could make an appearance from the bench this afternoon, highlighting several of the youngster’s strengths that can be used.

“Yeah, there’s still a way to go. But for part of the game, he is ready, and that is good news. We can use his capabilities, his physicality, taking the ball, and bravery. He can contribute.”
