Marcus Rashford has returned to training ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Copenhagen.
Rashford missed United’s 1-0 win at Fulham on Saturday after failing a late fitness test. The England striker travelled to Fulham with the rest of the United squad but was unable to recover in time, following a heavy knock in training.
But Rashford handed United boss Erik ten Hag a major boost by returning to training with the full squad. Also present at training was defender Victor Lindelof, who also missed the Fulham game, after being struck down by illness.
United need to win at Copenhagen tomorrow after registering their first win in the group stage by beating the Danish side at Old Trafford a fortnight ago.
Ten Hag’s side lost their opening two group games to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, but got back on track with a 1-0 win over Copenhagen, which included a last gasp penalty save from Andre Onana.
Rashford sparked controversy last week when he publicly celebrated his birthday hours after the Manchester derby thrashing at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s champions.
Ten Hag branded the actions ‘unacceptable’ but maintained that wasn’t the reason for his absence for the clash at Craven Cottage. Gary Neville addressed the situation and compared it to how he would have behaved during his own Old Trafford career.
“If we lost a match, any match, forget about the Manchester derby where we wouldn’t be seen for a week or two weeks, but if we lost a match, nights out were cancelled,” he wrote in his Sky Sports column. “Simple as that. That was my rule and the rule for the other lads in the dressing room.
“Optically I don’t think it looks great if you are seen in a nightclub in Manchester after a derby loss. I don’t think it is right. Erik ten Hag said it was a mistake, I would class it as a mistake as well.”
