Manchester United got a vital win over Luton thanks to a Victor Lindelof goal.

United struggled to convert their chances with Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho all going close in the first half. Erik ten Hag was forced into a substitution with Christian Eriksen going off injured and he was replaced by Mason Mount.

Despite United having a number of chances it took the unlikely Lindelof to open the scoring in the second half. Hojlund also looked to have picked up a knock and was replaced by Anthony Martial. Our chief writer Samuel Luckhurst was in the press box at Old Trafford and here are his player ratings from the Premier League fixture.

Andre Onana

Bright as a button to deny Carlton Morris’s first-half header when Luton had barely threatened. 7

Diogo Dalot

Whipped in an inviting cross that Scott McTominay nodded over and ever-present in attacks down the right. 6

Harry Maguire

Made some early careless errors and could have been more adventurous with the ball, such was Luton’s reticence. Defended well towards the end. 7

Victor Lindelof

Gifted Luton the chance that led to Morris’s effort but atoned with a clinical goal to break the deadlock. Grew thereafter and vindicated his selection over Raphael Varane. 8

Sergio Reguilon

As erratic and energetic as ever. Prone to the odd rash decision and had little influence in the final third until he slid in to cross for Bruno Fernandes. 5

Scott McTominay

Had a good chance from Dalot’s header and unwittingly assisted Lindelof. Thomas Kaminski kept out the Scot’s late header. 5

Christian Eriksen

Came off in the 40th minute due to an impact injury. Did not require a stretcher and walked down the tunnel. 5

Marcus Rashford

His arms were outstretched in each half as his negative body language resurfaced. Looked restricted on the right but his drilled cross led to the goal. Wasted a one-on-one. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Had some decent moments but also prone to the odd impatient pass and shot. The general pattern of the contest clouded his decision-making at times. 5

Alejandro Garnacho

Engineered a good chance but blazed over and when Hojlund played him in, he lost all composure. Switched to the right in the second half. 6

Rasmus Hojlund

Squandered a gilt-edged chance in the 10th minute and headed wide with another early in the second half. Came off injured. 5

Subs

Mason Mount

Showed decent composure in move for the goal but otherwise tepid. 6

Antony

Embarked on a captivating run to tee up Rashford. 6

Raphael Varane

Late cameo. 5

Anthony Martial

Little impact. 5

Manager

Selected a logical team and the inclusion of Lindelof over Varane paid off at both ends, given the final score. United still unconvincing winners. 6
