Goodnight
Thanks for joining us on today’s live Manchester United blog!
It was a rough night for Erik ten Hag’s men, who are no longer in control of their Champions League destiny.
Join us tomorrow for more reaction and until then, take care.
OPINION: Ten Hag’s transfer gamble back under the spotlight
High up in the stands in Galatasaray’s stadium a banner, written as if dripping in blood, chillingly reads: ‘Your nightmare is back again’.
It is meant as a reminder of the fear and intimidation Galatasaray’s vocal fans can instil in opponents who set foot in the cauldron, but it could have been written for Andre Onana.
For Onana was solely culpable for Manchester United’s capitulation here, his two howlers nudging Erik ten Hag’s side closer to Champions League elimination. After an error-strewn start to his United career, Onana had settled down in recent weeks, but here he was back to being a liability, gifting Galatasaray two goals with slapstick incompetence
Fernandes sends brutally honest message to team-mates
Bruno Fernandes told his Manchester United team-mates that they must look at themselves after conceding more “really bad goals” in their Champions League giveaway at Galatasaray.
The Red Devils’ hopes of reaching the knockout phase were dented by a thrilling 3-3 draw in Istanbul. Erik ten Hag’s side twice boasted a two-goal advantage, only to surrender their leads in calamitous fashion. Goalkeeper Andre Onana could be questioned for all three of Galatasaray’s comeback goals, particularly his howler to make it 3-2 midway through the second half, while Fernandes himself gave away both free-kicks for Hakim Ziyech’s two set-piece strikes.
United’s captain then bemoaned in a post-match interview with TNT Sports: “We conceded really bad goals. We have to take control of the situations in all of them. We were on top of the game twice and we had far too many chances to have the game closed. We were not clinical enough.”
CONFIRMED: United’s path to the last 16
After Bayern Munich were held to a 0-0 draw with Copenhagen, Manchester United now know exactly what they need to do on matchday six to reach the Champions League knockouts.
- Beat Bayern Munich
- Copenhagen vs Galatasaray ends in a draw
Ten Hag refuses to blame Onana
Erik ten Hag refused to blame Andre Onana after Manchester United blew a two-goal lead against Galatasaray… and instead insisted that HE was responsible.
The Red Devils headed to Istanbul knowing that they needed a win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase alive after losing three of their opening four games in Group A. However, United blew their chance thanks to another error-strewn performance from Onana.
He was rooted to the spot when Hakim Ziyech rifled home a free-kick to halve the hosts’ deficit following early goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes. Scott McTominay restored United’s two-goal advantage before Onana fumbled a second Ziyech effort into his own net to buoy Galatasaray. Kerem Akturkoglu scored a third soon after to cap a miserable night for United.
66-year-old United tradition broken
This is one for the kit lovers.
Tonight marked the first time since 1957 that Manchester United have worn red shorts.
OPINION: Onana has become Ten Hag’s biggest threat
The visitors could have pulled off a result that defined their season in Istanbul, only for their goalkeeper to let them down badly in a Champions League encounter that they really needed to win.
Winners and losers from Galatasaray draw
They led 2-0 and 3-1 in rainy Istanbul, but Manchester United still contrived to fail to win a match that leaves their Champions League hopes for the season hanging by a thread.
Two goals in the first 18 minutes from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes had put Erik ten Hag’s side clear in the clash, only for Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick to beat a static Andre Onana just before the half-hour mark to halve the deficit.
Scott McTominay restored the two-goal lead 10 minutes into the second half, before Onana fumbled in another Ziyech free-kick and then Kerem Akturkoglu blasted in a superb third.

6 talking points from Istanbul
Manchester United threw away yet another lead in Europe, leaving their Champions League hopes in jeopardy after a thriller against Galatasaray.
After a five-goal thriller in the reverse fixture, it was non-stop drama once more. United led 2-0 and 3-1 but their opponents didn’t surrender, knowing how painful a defeat would be.
Fernandes left fuming as Garnacho’s celebrations take awkward turn
Bruno Fernandes was seen angrily remonstrating with Alejandro Garnacho after the Manchester United forward goaded Galatasaray fans after scoring in Wednesday night’s pivotal Champions League fixture.
Fresh off scoring a wondergoal at the weekend, Garnacho broke the deadlock in a must-win match for United in the 11th minute, lashing a left-footed strike beyond Fernando Muslera. He celebrated by putting a finger to his lips to silence the boisterous home support – but the gesture did not go down well with Fernandes.
Fernandes could be seen trying to stop Garnacho from shushing the crowd before Muslera ran forward to confront the United winger. Both Garnacho and Fernandes were then spoken to by referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez.
What results United need
If Bayern Munich beat Copenhagen at home tonight, Manchester United’s path to the last 16 is most likely a victory over Bayern and a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
A shock Copenhagen win tonight would send United out, though.
FULL-TIME: Galatasaray 3-3 Man Utd
What a game!
But Manchester United threw it away again…
Scott McTominay had restored the Red Devils’ two-goal advantage early in the second half but goals from Hakim Ziyech and Kerem Akturkoglu drew Galatasaray level.
Erik ten Hag’s side will now need to hope that Copenhagen don’t beat Bayern Munich in the 8pm kick-off and then beat Bayern themselves at Old Trafford on December 12 to reach the knockout stages and hope that Copenhagen also do them a favour.
Three minutes added
Only three!
Facundo Pellistri has just squandered a brilliant chance – will that be United’s last?
POST
Bruno Fernandes so close!
Just seconds after Wilfried Zaha should do better against Onana, Fernandes rattled the post with a right-footed effort.
Ten Hag makes two more subs
Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are making way, with Facundo Pellistri and Diogo Dalot replacing them.
GOAL: Galatasaray 3-3 Man Utd (Akturkoglu)
A wonder goal from the substitute!
Andre Onana won’t be happy getting beaten at his near post but it’s Kerem Akturkoglu who gets the glory, guiding in a left-footed strike on the angle.
We’re all square at 3-3!
GOAL: Galatasaray 2-3 Man Utd (Ziyech)
It’s a howler from Andre Onana…
Another Hakim Ziyech free-kick courtesy of a cheap Bruno Fernandes foul and the ball somehow finds its way in after Onana got his wrist to it.
This game has been epic!
Double change from Ten Hag
Erik ten Hag has made two changes before the hour mark.
Anthony Martial and Kobbie Mainoo are on for Rasmus Hojlund and Sofyan Amrabat.
GOAL: Galatasaray 1-3 Man Utd (McTominay)
And United have restored their two-goal lead!
It’s Scott McTominay who prods the ball in for his first ever Champions League goal.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka bound down the right and slid it across to McTominay.
The move started from Harry Maguire’s smart defending at the back.
Back underway
We’re out for the second half.
A reminder that only a win would be enough for United should Copenhagen end up stunning Bayern Munich tonight.
HALF-TIME: Galatasaray 1-2 Man Utd
So far so good for United, but there’s a long way to go.
The Red Devils threw away a two-goal lead in their last Champions League fixture and you’d be silly to rule out that happening again after Hakim Ziyech struck on the half-hour mark.
Well-taken goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes had given United their two-goal advantage.
Galatasaray can also count themsevles unfortunate not to have had a penalty after Scott McTominay handled the ball, with VAR not deeming it a clear and obvious error.
Back of the net but no goal
For just a moment there, Mauro Icardi looked to have made it 2-2 with brilliant finish.
But the flag was instantly raised once the ball hit the back of the net.
GOAL: Galatasaray 1-2 Man Utd (Ziyech)
The hosts have one back!
Bruno Fernandes gave away a free-kick on right-hand edge of the box and former Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech put it through the United wall.
Ziyech played for Erik ten Hag at Ajax and has just given his old boss a huge issue.
GOAL: Galatasaray 0-2 Man Utd (Fernandes)
That is a screamer!
Bruno Fernandes collects the ball from Luke Shaw’s outside-of-the foot pass on the left-hand side and produces a stunning dipping shot, beating Fernando Muslera all ends up.
What a start for United.
Penalty relief
Scott McTominay is a lucky man.
After pinball in the United box following a Galatasaray corner, the ball hit McTominay’s slightly outstretched left arm and a VAR check ensued.
Despite the harsh call that went against Newcastle last night, though, the referee was told to play on.
GOAL: Galatasaray 0-1 Man Utd (Garnacho)
He’s done it again!
A brilliantly-worked goal, with Bruno Fernandes assisting Alejandro Garnacho after good hold-up play from Rasmus Hojlund.
“This guy is the real deal,” hails Rio Ferdinand on commentary.
Kick-off: Galatasaray 0-0 Man Utd
Here we go – Manchester United must not lose here.
A draw paired with a shock Copenhagen win away to Bayern Munich would, though, send Erik ten Hag’s side out.
Welcome to hell
That imfamous message from 1993 is on show once again as the teams prepare to come out of the tunnel.
Will Manchester United rise to the occasion this time?
Even a draw might not be enough…
15 minutes to go
We’re approaching kick-off!
The rain is still falling but the pitch seems fine… For now.
Mainoo omission explained
Erik ten Hag pointed to Sofyan Amrabat’s experience in selecting him over Kobbie Mainoo.
When speaking to TNT Sports, Ten Hag explained: “Sofyan is used to playing big games. I am comfortable with Kobbie – we saw on Sunday he can do it but he can’t play every game, he is coming back from an injury and is a junior. He has to get used to playing many games in a high intensity.”
Ten Hag has no pitch concers
“I think the pitch is good,” Erik ten Hag tells TNT Sports after making light of the “Manchester weather” in Istanbul.
Ten Hag’s comments on Mainoo
It’s interesting to see Kobbie Mainoo left out following his man-of-the-match display at Everton on Sunday.
In his pre-match press conference yesterday, Erik ten Hag hinted that the 18-year-old would be starting.
“We don’t have fear (of starting him),” Ten Hag affirmed. “If players are good enough, then they are old enough.”
How Galatasaray line up
Galatasaray have also announced their starting XI.
Muslera; Boey, Abdülkerim, Kaan, Angelino; Ndombele, Torreira; Ziyech, Mertens, Zaha; Icardi

Just in…
A UEFA statement reads: “We are closely monitoring the weather forecast and at this stage the match will go ahead as scheduled.”
Preparations going ahead of planned
This looks positive and suggests that the match is well and truly on.
Should UEFA be forced to call the game off, we’re likely to see it take place tomorrow going by previous rearrangements.

Double injury boost for Galatasaray game
Erik ten Hag has confirmed Manchester United duo Rasmus Hojlund and Antony are both in contention to star in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash at Galatasaray.
The stakes are high for the Red Devils as they know another loss would spell the end of their hopes of progression into the knockout rounds.
Three defeats from their opening four games leaves United rock bottom of Group A, while also being just one point away from second.
More transfer info
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to green light four new arrivals at Manchester United in January, with a defensive midfielder among their priorities.
The British billionaire is set take on 25 percent of the club and is poised to be in control of their football operations.
Recruitment is set to be a key part of that with the INEOS chief prepared to sanction arrivals in problems positions.
United boss Erik ten Hag was allowed to spend hefty sums once again in the summer, bringing in the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana, but the team have struggled and there is a need to continue investing in the squad as they make up for a slow start.
Amrabat set for axe
Manchester United’s recruitment team are planning to sign a new holding midfielder in January to replace Sofyan Amrabat.
The Morocco international, 27, was signed on a season-loan from Fiorentina on deadline day.
United paid £8.5million up front for the midfielder and can sign him on a permanent deal for £21.5m at the end of the season, taking the total deal up to £30m.
Yet United are unlikely to activate that clause.
Amrabat is struggling to nail down a spot in the starting XI and has played just 18 minutes of Premier League football in November.
Teenager Kobbie Mainoo was selected ahead of him against Everton last Sunday.
Ferdinand issues health update
Rio Ferdinand has insisted he is “alive and kicking” after being taken ill during Newcastle’s draw with PSG on Tuesday.
Ferdinand was working as a pundit for TNT Sports for that Champions League clash, but left the broadcast mid-game. Host Laura Woods put his sudden departure down to “unforeseen circumstances”, with the former England international returning to his hotel room to rest.
United to target four players in January
Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign four new players in the January transfer window.
The Guardian says that Erik ten Hag wants a defensive midfielder, a right‑sided centre-back, a No 8 and a striker. Things could be complicated by the delay to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal for 25 per cent of the club and the need to comply with financial fair play rule
FA confident of Mainoo allegiance
The Football Association are confident England youth international Kobbie Mainoo won’t switch his international allegiance.
Mainoo, 18, made his first Premier League start for Manchester United in their 3-0 win against Everton last Sunday. The teenage midfielder was praised by several pundits – including Gary Neville and Roy Keane – and could become a regular at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand compares Mainoo to Fabregas
Rio Ferdinand is the latest to heap praise on Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo following his sensational full debut against Everton on Sunday.
The Red Devils academy graduate displayed the kind of technical quality and composure that defied his years at Goodison Park, which helped Erik ten Hag’s men run out 3-0 winners. Mainoo has long been highly thought of within the United ranks, but now the rest of the Premier League has been exposed to his quality.
Berbatov sends X-rated advice to Man Utd
Dimitar Berbatov insists Manchester United “have put themselves in a position” where they need to wins to have any chance of Champions League qualification.
”United need to get a good result at Galatasaray,” he told Betfair. “With United’s current form, the chances are there for them. Every game is different, especially when you go to Galatasaray – they have good players and crazy fans. But forget that when you step on the pitch, try to concentrate and know you have good players, hungry players coming into the team full of confidence and try to mix it with experience. Try to attack and score goals and don’t make f***ing stupid mistakes.”
Ten Hag’s message to his players
Erik ten Hag has warned his Manchester United players not to lose their heads in the face of hostility against Galatasaray on Wednesday night.
United must win in Istanbul to ensure they remain in control of their chances of reaching the last 16, with Galatasaray and their fans certain to try to provoke and intimidate Ten Hag’s side. Against that backdrop, Ten Hag has reminded his players of the need to be disciplined and calm in the Turkish capital, in order to give themselves the best possible chance of securing the win they need.
United face old tormentor
Manchester United and their old tormentor, Angelino, meet again on Wednesday for another defining Champions League clash.
Three years ago, Angelino was on loan from Manchester City and scored the opening goal in RB Leipzig’s 3-2 victory over the Red Devils which sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side tumbling into the Europa League. Now playing for Turkish giants Galatasaray, the Spanish left-back and his team-mates have the chance do the same – or even worse if Erik ten Hag’s men eventually finish bottom.
Mainoo could feature again
Erik ten Hag has no concerns about handing teenager Kobbie Mainoo his Champions League debut in Wednesday’s must-win game away to Galatasaray.
Midfielder Mainoo, 18, was United’s best player in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Everton – his first start in the Premier League. With experienced midfield duo Casemiro and Christian Eriksen both out, Ten Hag is expected to stick with Mainoo in what is certain to be a hostile and intimidating atmosphere.
