News flash: Incredible record-breaking Manchester United run ended by FA Cup third round draw

Manchester United’s record-breaking run of 12 home domestic cup draws has finally come to an end.

The Red Devils will take on Wigan at the DW Stadium in the FA Cup third round – their first away tie in THREE years.

Erik ten Hag‘s side created history in September when they were pitted against Newcastle at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup draw.

It was the 12th time in a row that United were handed a home clash in either the FA Cup or Carabao Cup.

Prior to Sunday’s FA Cup draw, which has seen Arsenal pitted against Liverpool, United have gone nearly three years without an away match.

That came in March 2021, when Leicester – en route to winning their first FA Cup – won 3-1 in a quarter-final clash at the King Power Stadium.

The 2021/22 season saw United knocked out in the third round of the League Cup, before exiting at the fourth round in the FA Cup as Middlesbrough triumphed on penalties.

Ten Hag almost won a domestic cup double in his first campaign at the Theatre of Dreams last term – winning seven home matches.

United came out on top in three home ties in the Carabao Cup before winning the two-legged semi-final against Nottingham Forest – their only away match in the last three years – before beating Newcastle in the final at Wembley.

And from the third round to the quarter-final, United breezed past Everton, Reading, West Ham and Fulham, before overcoming Brighton in the semi-final at Wembley, with rivals Manchester City scooping the trophy in the final.

The start of this season was no different for United, as they beat Crystal Palace at home in the Carabao Cup third round, before the Magpies knocked them out the following round.

It saw them break Shrewsbury’s previous record of 11 straight home cup ties, which they set between 2017 and 2019.

Incredibly, United’s record of drawing 12 consecutive home ties were 4,096/1.

They will now have to overcome Wigan in the opening weekend of January to start a new home record run.
