Man United will reach a €40 million deal for the elite player in January.

Manchester United are looking into a winter deal for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, according to German journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Frenchman was heavily linked with the Red Devils in the back end of the summer transfer window, but a deal did not materialise in the end.

United were aiming to part ways with Harry Maguire to pursue a deal for Todibo, but the former captain decided against leaving Old Trafford.

Todibo has continued to be mentioned as a target for the Red Devils and Plettenberg claims that he is on the club’s transfer shortlist this winter.

The German journalist added that this should not affect the club’s pursuit of Benfica star Antonio Silva, who is the top target for the summer.

Man Utd could replace Varane with Todibo this winter

Over the past month, Raphael Varane has fallen down the pecking order under manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman has preferred Harry Maguire over him in the right centre-back role and does not believe Varane is good enough at left centre-back.

As a result, he has been a regular on the substitutes’ bench and we won’t be surprised if he decides to secure a new challenge at the start of 2024.

His departure would allow United to secure extra funds to afford the signing of Todibo. The Frenchman could be signed for a fee of around €40 million.

The 23-year-old would be a top-class acquisition for United. He is a strong ball playing defender who likes to make tackles and engage in duels.

However, his main strength is his work rate and ability to track back. This season, he averages a stunning 7.9 ball recoveries in the French top-flight.

United’s chances of signing him should only improve with Sir Jim Ratcliffe on the verge of securing a minority stake at the club from the Glazers.

The British billionaire is also the majority shareholder of Nice and this should put United in a strong position to land the former Barcelona man.

If Varane were to stay at the club, United could seek a loan deal for Todibo with a buy clause.
