Liverpool’s rivals received a massive boost on Sunday as Jürgen Klopp’s side suffered their first defeat of 2024 against Arsenal. Manchester City will now face Brentford on Monday Night Football with a chance to close the gap to just two points on the Reds.
Pep Guardiola’s side also hold a game in hand on Liverpool, allowing City to gain the upper hand in the title race moving forward. Klopp’s side will now look to bounce back in their next fixture against Burnley on Saturday, although he will be without key defender Ibrahima Konaté, who was sent off in the dying embers of the loss to Arsenal.
The Liverpool boss had previously warned after the dominant 4-1 win over Chelsea in midweek that his players looked fatigued, which was certainly the case in the first half against the Gunners. As well as tiredness, they also lacked the strong presence of Mohamed Salah on the right wing, in a game that was calling out for a moment of magic that the Egyptian so often produces.

Manchester United eyes two Erik ten Hag replacements
Manchester United are eyeing former Premier League bosses Julen Lopetegui and Antonio Conte as possible replacements for Erik ten Hag, according to Caught Offiside. The Red Devils secured a win against West Ham United on Sunday but Ten Hag’s position is far from safe as new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyes a potential change.
The report goes on to state that there is no immediate desire to part ways with the current United boss, although initial contact has been made to sound out the previously noted target’s interest in the role. Lopetegui recently turned down the chance to manage in the Saudi Pro League while Conte has been heavily linked with roles in Italy.
Liverpool.com says: United is entering a new era under the guidance of local billionaire Ratcliffe, which could spell danger for Liverpool in the future. It could be a turbulent time for the club when Klopp departs after this season, which makes United a threat if they do improve under Ten Hag or a new coach.
Man United star subject of Saudi interest
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal is set to revisit a deal for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in the summer, according to Portuguese outlet Record. Fernandes reportedly rejected an ‘astronomical’ offer from the Middle East in January, in a bid to continue competing for trophies in England.

Fernandes is one of the best players in the top flight of English football at his best and losing him would be likened to Liverpool losing Mohamed Salah — who has also been the subject of transfer interest from Saudi Arabia.
Like with Liverpool and Salah, the club would like to avoid another period of speculation that will quickly become tiresome. For Liverpool, the best way of doing that is agreeing a new contract with the Egyptian.
