Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchinson has rubbished any suggestion that Thomas Tuchel could replace Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are looking for a new manager after Klopp announced in Janaury that he would be stepping down at the end of the season. Liverpool’s legendary boss has enjoyed a trophy-laden tenure since arriving at Anfield in October 2015, winning the Champions League in 2018 and ending the club’s long wait for a Premier League title in 2020.

Klopp’s time on Merseyside could end with plenty more silverware. Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday and also remain in contention for the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League.

Bayer Leverkusen manager and former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso is said to be among the leading contenders to replace Klopp. The Spanaird’s current team are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season and are eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table after 22 matches.

Record German champions Bayern Munich currently trail Alonso’s high-flying Leverkusen in second place, with manager Tuchel enduring a difficult season at the Bavarian giants. Bayern trail Lazio 1-0 in their Champions League last 16 tie after the first leg and went out of the German Cup to third-division team Saarbrucken in November.

And when it was put to Hutchinson if he would like to see Tuchel replace Klopp, the 52-year-old rubbished the idea. “Ahh, no chance,” the pundit – who also played for Everton – told ESPN. “No chance. He would be tenth on the list, at best!”

Tuchel previously managed Chelsea in the Premier League, winning the Champions League in 2021 during his 18-month tenure at the West London club. He left the Blues in September 2022 before joining Bayern in March last year.
