Manchester City secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton in the premier League on Saturday.

Erling Haaland netted the only goal of the game early in the contest and despite having plenty of second half chances, the Blues failed to find a second. The result extended City’s unbeaten start to the campaign ahead of the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup.

Nunes impresses

Where has this Matheus Nunes been for 13 months?

The phrase ‘like a new signing’ is often overused in football, and mostly reserved for returning players from injury. But Nunes fits the brief after enduring a stop-start debut season at Manchester City.

For some players, they just need a year to get to grips with Pep Guardiola’s system and a break in the team. Nunes has the latter and the evidence suggests he might have achieved the former.

Nunes only started 16 games last season and recorded just five assists in 31 appearances. In the last four days, he has a goal and three assists to catapult himself joint-top of the assist charts in the space of just two games.

Pep’s change

Manchester City continued their unbeaten run with a home win over struggling Southampton – but the result doesn’t tell the full story of an afternoon where they struggled to kill off the visitors.

Erling Haaland’s early goal proved enough for the win, with Southampton looking better than their league position suggests. They enjoyed more of the ball in the first half and hit the bar shortly before the break, and when City searched for a second goal to kill the game they stood firm and got bodies in the way.

But City did enough to prevent any late equaliser and moved top of the Premier League ahead of rivals Liverpool and Arsenal playing each other on Sunday. These are the moments you might have missed.
