How Liverpool’s 12 loanees fare when midfield moves pay off
Jurgen Klopp has cleared some players for loan to Liverpool this season
Players on loan from Liverpool, who are nearing the end of the 2022/23 season, have had a mixed experience during their time away from the club.
Players like Rhys Williams and Max Woltman were recalled in January after failing to make their mark, while others used the winter transfer window to earn first-team minutes at an EFL side .
Regardless of the loan amount, any player on temporary absence from Liverpool will be hoping to return to Merseyside at the end of the current season after impressing Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff.
A total of 12 stars are currently based elsewhere and ECHO has taken a closer look at how those on loan have fared since leaving.
The 20-year-old, who signed a new long-term contract with the Reds in January, has made a total of 40 appearances in all competitions this season in what has been a campaign for Rovers. Morton more than did his part in leading the newly promoted side and helping the 1995 Premier League winners reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Sepp van den Berg Schalke
The Dutch defender, who has been out since October with a serious ankle injury, recently returned in a league game for reserve side Schalke. However, this match did not go as planned as they scored an own goal and received a yellow card in the 2-2 draw against Düren.
Prior to his setback, Van den Berg was in the starting XI for the first four Bundesliga games of the season and appeared to play a major role as the season progressed. It remains to be seen whether he will return to the first team by 2022/23. Leighton Clarkson-Aberdeen
Like Morton, Leighton Clarkson has reaped the benefits of a solid midfield role. The 21-year-old has started 23 of Aberdeen’s 29 league games this season and has proven to be a valuable asset in both scoring and assisting. The Scottish Premiership side had a tough run of one win from nine games between December and February, with the sacking of Jim Goodwin as manager, but results have improved since then and the Dons remain firmly in pursuit of a top-six finish .
Conor Bradley – Bolton Wanderers
Bradley is an outstanding player in a promotion chasing Bolton side. He easily adapted to his League One environment and made quite an impression during his short stay.
Bolton boss Ian Evatt has openly admitted he would like the 19-year-old to return for a second spell next year. “I would be optimistic but I really believe he will play for Liverpool and play regularly, he is so good,” he said. “It is constantly evolving and improving. We were hoping we could get another year out of him, but I would completely understand if Liverpool felt the need to keep him to play for them.
Bradley has made 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing six assists for Los Blancos.
Adam Lewis – Newport County
The left-back recently returned to Liverpool from Newport County from the second tier after suffering a season-ending injury.
This setback will have been a blow for Lewis, who played 21 games for the Exiles in the fourth division and made a name for himself with the team. Newport boss Graham Coughlan was disappointed by this blow, telling the South Wales Argus: “We are extremely disappointed as he has been a brilliant servant to this loan club Liverpool, and we thank both Liverpool and Adam for his service. a big loss because he balances us with his left foot on that side and [he’s dangerous] with his set pieces.”
Lewis is out of contract at Liverpool this summer and a new deal looks unlikely.
Vitezslav Jaros – Stockport County
Recruited by Stockport for their first season in the Football League after an 11-year absence, the Liverpool Academy shooter quickly replaced Ben Hinchliffe as the club’s number 1 option.
However, disaster struck during an October match with Salford City when Jaros was forced off through injury and subsequently relinquished his starting place to long-serving Hinchliffe. Now recovered from his spell on the sidelines, the Liverpool mercenary failed to make his way back into the starting eleven and has spent his previous 15 League Two games on the bench. Anderson Arroyo – Alaves
The Colombian defender is currently in the midst of his sixth spell away from Anfield, playing for Spanish second division side Mirandes, but has not featured any regular minutes. The 23-year-old has made 12 league appearances, eight of which as a regular, as his side look to avoid relegation. Mirandes is currently seven points ahead of the decline.
Paul Glatzel – Tranmere Rovers
It seems Glatzel simply can’t seem to catch a break on the injury front. The striker returned to Prenton Park for a second successive season after impressing last year but has been sidelined since September with a recurring hamstring injury. Glatzel suffered several setbacks in his earlier career, the latest of which came in his first appearance of 2022/23 against Bradford City, having lasted just 14 minutes as a substitute before being forced out. His recovery process is ongoing.
Jarell Quansah – Bristol Rovers
After impressing at Academy level, Liverpool made the decision to send the towering centre-back to League One Bristol Rovers for the second half of the season. Since joining Gas, the 20-year-old has gone straight into Joey Barton’s starting side, making 10 consecutive appearances.
Quansah received a red card after losing his composure in a 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday, a moment he will need to learn from.
Luke Chambers-Kilmarnock
Like Quansah, Chambers earned a January departure after improving his reputation at Academy games in recent months. He has made seven appearances so far for the Scottish side, who are battling for survival in the top flight.
Fidel O’Rourke – City of Halifax
Recalled by the Reds in January after taking the Welsh Premier League by storm while representing Caenarfon Town, the striker has made yet another move to spend time at National League side Halifax Town, although he is yet to get off the ground for the Shaymen. .
Jack Bearne – Kidderminster Harrier
The 21-year-old forward has made 13 starts in National League North since joining Kidderminster at the start of September, also making eight appearances off the bench and scoring three goals in that span. Kiddy remains with an outside chance to qualify for the playoffs with seven games remaining.
