‘Agreed personal terms’: After claims £40m star would speak to Liverpool, he now could join City – Romano

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Mateo Kovacic this summer, but it looks like the Croatian is set to join Manchester City instead.

The Reds announced the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion yesterday. The Argentine is a fantastic addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side and he will make them better.

Liverpool, however, still need at least one more midfielder this summer, and Kovacic has been linked. Fabrizio Romano has now shared some bad news on that front.

90min claimed in April that Liverpool were one of the clubs who had expressed an interest in signing Kovacic this summer. The midfielder’s agents reportedly flew to England to hold talks with the Reds and other sides.

Kovacic, like many of his teammates, had a very poor campaign at Stamford Bridge this season, and Chelsea are apparently open to selling him.

There is no news about Liverpool following up on their previous interest, but the Reds’ rivals, Manchester City, look to be in the driving seat to sign him.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted yesterday that Pep Guardiola’s side have agreed personal terms with Kovacic and the player is keen to join City this summer.

He wrote: “Mateo Kovacić has now agreed personal terms with Manchester City after advanced talks already revealed last week.

“Kovacić wants the move, next step has to be between clubs as Chelsea and City will discuss fee after the UCL final. Chelsea, open to sell Kovacić.”

    TBR View:

Despite the season he has just had at Stamford Bridge, Kovacic is a very good player.

The Croatian, who joined Chelsea for £40 million (BBC), was excellent for the Blues in his first few years at the club, and his quality on the ball and how resistant he is to the press make him an excellent option.

Also, if Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp want to sign you, you must be doing something right, and Kovacic certainly is.

As things stand, it looks like Liverpool will not be the ones signing Kovacic this summer, his next destination seems to be the Etihad to join Manchester City.

What Brighton players said about Alexis Mac Allister left Liverpool with easy transfer decision
Liverpool’s summer transfer business has begun after the impressive capture of Alexis Mac Allister.

The 24-year-old was unveiled as the Reds’ first signing of the summer on Thursday morning and has signed a five-year deal at the club. Mac Allister arrives at Anfield with 98 Premier League appearances to his name and will be ready to slot straight into Jurgen Klopp’s midfield next season.

Taking the No.10 shirt from its previous owner, Sadio Mane, will ensure the World Cup winner has big boots to fill when in action during the 2023/24 campaign, though Mac Allister certainly comes across as an induvial who is ready to rise to this latest challenge in his career.

Helping Brighton secure European football for the very first time in their history is an accomplishment already achieved by the versatile midfielder, whose priority will now turn to helping Liverpool compete for the biggest prizes in the game.

MAC ALLISTER DONE DEAL: Alexis Mac Allister on why he joined Liverpool, early deal and where he’ll play

Klopp’s side will require further additions to the squad in order to be capable of challenging Manchester City next term, with an emphasis likely to be placed on bringing other midfield targets to Merseyside. Mac Allister marks a step in the right direction for the Reds’ recruitment drive, although he will need to be backed up with signings of a similar quality.

Offering an opinion on Liverpool’s new No.10, ECHO jury columnist Andrew Cullen believes Mac Allister possesses all the necessary skills to deliver an instant impact.

Andrew Cullen (@BrothersRed5) – Mac Allister brings much-needed attributes to Liverpool’s midfield

Liverpool’s summer transfer business has got off to a bright start with the capture of Brighton’s mercurial midfield maestro, Alexis Mac Allister.

The fee according to some reports could be as low as £35million which, if correct, would represent a smart piece of business. The deal is not only smart from a financial perspective, but also because Liverpool will be bringing in a young, vibrant midfielder, who has proven Premier League pedigree. Mac Allister will bring a spark and flair to a Liverpool midfield which was flat last season and lacked creativity.

After an indifferent start to Premier League life, Mac Allister started to make a difference to the Brighton team last season, playing an indispensable role in Brighton’s remarkable rise. Alongside his impressive displays on the domestic stage, he too performed on the international stage by winning football’s most coveted prize in Qatar.

Brighton play a dynamic, attacking style of football, not too dissimilar to Klopp’s heavy metal style, so Mac Allister’s transition should, on paper at least, be seamless. With his playing style, he should be able to synchronise with a Thiago or Trent pairing and complement a more functional pairing of Henderson and Fabinho.

As well as impressive physical attributes, his former Brighton team-mates speak warmly about his temperament, mentality, and personality. Klopp looks for this humble ambition in a player.

After the blow of falling out of the Jude Bellingham race, the signing of Alexis Mac Allister is a good start to Liverpool’s summer business. Of course, Liverpool still need to bolster its midfield, and arguably the defence, with pace and power, so it is hoped that this business is only the start of things to come this summer.
