In addition to Onana: Man United are now looking to sign Bayern Munich’s ‘best player in the world’

In addition to Onana: Man United are now looking to sign Bayern Munich’s ‘best player in the world’

In addition to Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Yann Sommer is apparently a target for Manchester United.

Onana appears to be the main target for the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag are looking for a new goalkeeper after David de Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expired at the end of June.

According to reports, international Cameroon and United have already agreed personal terms; the payment agreement has yet to be finalized.

A bid of £34m plus £5m in add-ons has been rejected by the Serie A outfit, according to Fabrizio Romano, who said on Wednesday the player was keen on the move and a deal had been made.

With United stepping up their summer activities after finalizing a deal for Mason Mount, another caretaker could be headed to Manchester alongside Onana despite the ongoing takeover situation. TEAMtalk provided a Man United move update on Wednesday on the Red Devils’ search for a goalkeeper.

According to the source, Onana is the main target at Old Trafford and United are actively looking for him. However, the club are “still keen on more options to support future number one Onana” and Sommer remains their first choice.

Sommer is seen by United as the perfect way to boost Boller Ten Hag’s goalkeeping skills, and it has been said that Bayern Munich “may be open to a deal”. A fee should be agreed before the Swiss international moves to Old Trafford, as his current contract still has two years left. Yann Sommer: Who is it?

The 34-year-old Sommer began his professional career with Swiss club FC Basel before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014.

Before moving to Bayern Munich in January, the goalkeeper made 335 appearances in all competitions during his nine-year spell with the Bundesliga. Since joining Bayern, Sommer has competed 25 times, picking up a Bundesliga championship medal in the final weekend.

Next season, Thomas Tuchel has five candidates to choose from, including players like Manuel Neuer and Alexander Nubel. If he moved to Manchester, he would bring a wealth of experience at the top level. Mönchengladbach’s Joe Scally has praised the 83-time Swiss international Sommer, calling him “the best in the world” and “incredible”.

He is the best there is. He does it every week. He did the same last year in our opener against Bayern.

“Since we know he’s the best goalkeeper, that’s basically what we expect from him in every game. He gives the team and the defense so much confidence because we know he’s always there to help us when things go wrong. He is simply great.

Even though Onana could play an important role in the Premier League and the Champions League, a transfer could be considered alongside him. If Sommer joins, he could try to represent Onana in domestic cup events.

Manchester United’s pre-season preparations are officially in full swing.

Several members of the squad showed up at the club’s training base in Carrington earlier this week to start working on their preparations for the upcoming season. Those who have not yet returned to the training ground enjoyed an extended summer break after their international cap in June and will return later this month. After a successful first season under manager Erik ten Hag, the Reds will be hoping to bounce back in 2023/24 and build on the success of last season. United will open their pre-season with a trip to Oslo next Wednesday to take on Leeds United.

It will be the first of seven friendlies the first team will play ahead of the Premier League opener against Wolves on August 14. The clash with Leeds could also be Mason Mount’s first appearance for United after joining the club earlier this week.

Mount completed his move to Old Trafford on Wednesday and wasted no time in rolling up his sleeves and moving straight into preparations for the season. With that in mind, MEN Sport have taken a look at five things that caught our eye during Thursday’s training session at Carrington.

    The introduction

Before the start of the training session, Ten Hag gathered his players to talk to them and no doubt go over his plans for the training session and the season ahead. Details of the conversation remain under wraps, of course, but the Dutchman had everyone on board when he delivered his speech. Ten Hag is obviously now in his second pre-season as United manager and will understand every member of his squad much better than he did twelve months ago. He will be hoping to maximize their upcoming friendlies to get his squad back in shape.

    Mount makes new friends

Just 24 hours after being revealed as a United player, Mount attended his first training session as a United player. Wearing a training shirt with the number 7 printed on the front, the former Chelsea midfielder wasted no time in impressing Ten Hag and his coaching team. In the photo, Mount was there doing a lot of ball work, participating in a rondo drill and doing some finishing drills. He even had time to pose for a photo with Lisandro Martinez, who he seemed to spend a lot of time with during the session.

    Double injury boost

The sight of Martinez back in training is a huge boost for anyone associated with United ahead of the club’s pre-season start. The Argentine’s first season at Old Trafford was suddenly cut short in April after fracturing his metatarsal in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Europa League. He returned to Carrington early to work on his recovery and the fact that he is already training with the main pack is an extremely promising sign. Donny van de Beek was also spotted training with the rest of the pack, suggesting his recovery from a serious knee injury is also progressing well.

    Plenty of young people

As is often the case with any pre-season club, first team training was littered with youngsters. Ten Hag are not afraid to promote from within and it is possible that a handful of the club’s younger players will be invited for the forthcoming pre-season tour.

Participants pictured from Thursday’s training session included Will Fish, Rhys Bennett, Marc Jurado, Joe Hugill, Shola Shoretire, Toby Collyer, Alvaro Fernandez, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Charlie Savage, Hannibal Mejbri, Maxi Oyedele, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad . Some are closer than others to fighting for a spot in the first team, but now is the perfect time for some of them to have a chance to catch Ten Hag’s eye. They will also gain valuable experience training alongside some of the club’s oldest stars.

    The guards union

A total of five goaltenders, including Dean Henderson, attended the session. Henderson reported to Carrington last week to continue his recovery from an injury suffered on loan at Nottingham Forest last season. Henderson was joined on the Carrington turf by fellow shooters Tom Heaton, Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar and Radek Vitek. David de Gea has obviously left the club, despite United continuing talks about the prospect of a new deal.
