Erik ten Hag got a big transfer boost as Glazers made the turnaround to Man Utd

The Glazers put Manchester United up for sale last November, with British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani looking to buy the club

Manchester United’s owners have told boss Erik ten Hag they will give him all the financial clout he needs this summer, despite the club being up for sale.

The Glazers were initially reluctant to penalize the £170m Ten Hag would like for transfers during the ongoing negotiations. British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani are the two leading candidates in the takeover saga.

‌But they also know that the value of the club will decline without serious investment and that they cannot fall further behind Manchester City and keep pace with the rest of their top four rivals. City won a treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season. ‌Ten Hag also needs a team capable of facing a serious challenge in the Champions League. Mason Mount has already crossed the threshold of Chelsea for a fee of 60 million pounds.

But talks are underway with Inter for goalkeeper Andre Onana and Atalanta for striker Rasmus Hojlund, with both Italian sides hot on their heels throughout the negotiation and loyal to the value they have placed on their two players.

United thought they had taken a big step a week ago in their bid to sign Cameroonian international Onana for just over £40m, but Inter are holding out for £50m. While Atalanta value Danish striker Hojlund at £60m and while that price may come down slightly in negotiations, United will still need to get closer to that amount to seal the deal. United are willing to offer players from the squad as part of a deal, including Mason Greenwood. But the financial outlay will still be significant, and the Glazers have told Ten Hag that the money will now be there for him to make whatever additions he wishes.

David De Gea finally left the club as a free agent last week after a lengthy departure process and Onana, who worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, is his priority. Meanwhile, Barcelona want to take over the young right-back Marc Jurado from the Red Devils.

Jurado joined United from Barcelona’s academy in September 2020 but is yet to make his first-team debut for Ten Hag’s side. The 19-year-old came on as a substitute in United’s 2-0 win over Leeds in a pre-season friendly in Oslo, Norway on Wednesday.

Ten Hag was asked about his summer transfer budget in May. He told reporters: “No, I have no control over that. The only thing I know is that Man United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, one of two or three bigger from a fan perspective. “The club has to be competitive… but in football you need money to build teams because the level of the players decides whether you are successful or not. Everyone knows that you need money to build a team and quality players are very expensive.”

‌It’s unclear when or if the Glazers will name a preferred bidder. It’s been eight months since the unpopular owners put United up for sale.

“XXI Century Football Capital believes the price of Manchester United has reached levels where investments no longer make sense. We therefore have turned our attention to other clubs.”

Sheikh Jassim bid to ‘remain live’

Despite the self-imposed deadline for Sheikh Jassim’s bid, it appears that the offer will remain on the table for the foreseeable future.

According to The Guardian, the Qatari will not fully walk away even if he doesn’t hear back. His offer, that is reportedly below the Glazers’ £6bn asking price, will remain live beyond today.

Glazers to respond to Sheikh Jassim

Sheikh Jassim will only have to wait a little while longer to find out if his final bid for Man United is successful.

According to Proactive, the Qatari billionaire will be told if his offer is accepted by the end of play today.

Should he not be then it is reported that he will stop engaging with the process.

McTominay opens up on Ten Hag influence

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has hailed Erik ten Hag for his influence on the side during his first 12 months at Old Trafford.

Talking to the Red Devils’ official website, he said: “Obviously, the transition in terms of his style is very, very different to some other coaches, but, as I say, that’s football. He’s always having you thinking, and having you think about new ideas and stuff like that.

“It’s good, that’s the best way to be with football: open-minded and going into every game, if he asks you to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and you try to learn it as best as you can. I think, for me, it’s great. I love it.”

The Red Devils looked to be edging towards a move for the South Korean defender with the Italian side resigned to losing him. He looks likely to still be on the move but Eddie Howe is looking to make a late play for his services.

That is according to talkSPORT, who suggest that Newcastle are keen to bolster their defence this summer and could pay Kim’s release clause.
