Arsenal fans experienced an emotional dream of color during the 2-2 draw against hated rivals Tottenham on Sunday. But when the final whistle blew, the only feeling left was disappointment.
When Bukayo Saka scored from the penalty spot in the 54th minute to make it 2-1, it looked like the momentum built would carry the Gunners to victory. After all, they took the lead in the first half, with Cristian Romero’s own goal canceled out by a rare moment of Spurs magic involving James Maddison and Son Heung-min.
However, north London derbies rarely go according to the usual script and just seconds after Saka’s penalty kick, Son and Maddison staged an elaborately choreographed celebration to toast the goal. Second equalizer of the match. Jorginho was the villain in the match, hanging the ball in midfield and allowing Maddison to steal it before releasing the Korean. Arsenal had a chance to make amends, the impressive Saka forcing Guglielmo Vicario into a good save in second-half stoppage time, but it wasn’t to be and the spoils were split.
Evaluations on Mikel Arteta’s players at Emirates Stadium is shown below…
Goalkeeper and defense
David Raya (7/10):
Made a truly miraculous save to deny Johnson just before the break. Made the odd decision to put the ball in play just before Spurs’ first kickoff. The delivery was very good, except for a few problems.
Ben Blanc (6/10):
Should have gotten to Maddison a little quicker for Spurs first. Other than that, he is generally very reassuring.
Gabriel (June 10):
He may have conceded two goals, but it’s hard to blame him for both goals. Continues to prove his manager wrong in dropping him at the start of this season.
Guillaume Saliba (June 10):
Mostly dominated and didn’t let Spurs have too much fun behind them.
Alexander Zinchenko (6/10):
Probe the opponent with excellent passes from midfield. Defensively, he could have closed in on Porro and Kulusevski multiple times.
Midfielder
Martin Odegaard (June 10):
Directs the Arsenal press effectively. There is no effect on the ball as far as we know.
Declan Rice (5/10):
Missed an interception before Son’s goal. Probably his least impressive performance in a red shirt to date, although that could be due to problems. Came off at half-time and reappeared on the bench with a bandaged calf.
Fabio Vieira (5/10):
Had difficulty getting into the rhythm of the match and was replaced by Havertz at the break
The Attacker
Bukayo Saka (7/10):
Beat Udogie all afternoon and it was no surprise when he created enough space to open the scoring after a deflected shot. Beaten a little too easily by Spurs’ first-half equaliser, but made up for it with a superb penalty.
Eddie Nketiah (5/10):
He worked exceptionally hard and electrified the crowd with a few tackles early on. He had a few half-chances that he failed to convert. A few carefree moments as he enjoyed the electric atmosphere.
Jesus Gabriel (June 10):
He had some shining moments and his replacement had some disappointments at the Emirates. Could be lined up as left winger again if Martinelli and Trossard are absent. Submarine and manager
Kai Havertz (5/10):
Another rather anonymous exhibition. He must start producing goods and justify his high transfer costs.
Jorginho (4/10):
Making a serious mistake caused Spurs to lead 2-2. Fairly reinstated, creating a roadblock to deny Richarlison the death penalty, but his mistake will sting for some time.
