Manchester City started the match well and controlled the tempo by dominating possession. They held the ball 70% of the first half but only hit the target once. The effectiveness of team rotation is shown in the fact that some players cannot combine with each other.
Newcastle had just one effort in the first half and Stefan Ortega made a great save as the two teams entered a deadlock at the break with the score 0-0.
The second half saw Manchester City fall behind after nine minutes of the restart. Alexander Isak was in the right place to convert Joelinton’s fine pass to give Eddie Howe’s side the lead. Guardiola’s team all seemed to have had poor matches as Man City only managed one shot in the second half. They still dominated ball control but could not regain the game as the home team won 1-0.
