Gary Neville has given his view on Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United following another defeat for his old club.
Man Utd news: Gary Neville has sympathy for Erik ten Hag
Gary Neville insists the Manchester United job is a graveyard for managers and Erik ten Hag is doing no worse than another boss could. Ten Hag is under increasing pressure following another loss but Neville claims problems above him at the club are to blame.
United suffered their sixth defeat of the season on Tuesday. The Red Devils went down 3-2 against Galatasaray in the Champions League despite leading on two occasions.
Ten Hag’s side have lost both matches in Europe as well as four of their seven Premier League outings. It is their worst start in the first 10 matches of a season across all competitions in 37 years.
But Neville is not pointing the finger at the manager. He says problems at the club in the last 10 years have constantly seen top players fail to perform at their previously high standards.

The former right-back says Ten Hag is facing the same issues previous bosses had and does not think that the team’s fortunes will change under any manager until they are resolved. Asked about United’s start to the season, Neville told “Scruffy, very scruffy.
“Up and down, inconsistent, injuries and lots of things going wrong on the pitch, lots of things going wrong off the pitch. I feel very sorry for the manager, I know a lot of people will say he’s got to do a lot better, and that’s fine, he’s the Manchester United manager, but there are a lot of big problems at the club that managers have found over the last ten years.
“I think until those problems are solved we’ll still continue to see underperforming teams, underperforming players. It’s become a graveyard for coaches and players, I said that a few years ago – it’s not too strong a term.
“They won these players off other clubs and then they end up coming to Manchester United and they end up not succeeding and not performing to their levels, why is that? It’s because it’s not culturally correct to accept players in the way that it should do and we need to get that right.”
Despite Neville’s view, Ten Hag has taken full responsibility for recent results and has promised to do all he can to turn it around. He said: “I am responsible for this team, for the performance, for the result, together with my squad and in this moment we don’t get the results and [the fans] are disappointed, I can understand.”
