Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is expecting to face an angered Everton on Sunday.
The Blues will host Man United at Goodison Park this weekend in their first game since suffering a points deduction. Everton were docked an unprecedented 10 points last week after being found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s financial rules, pushing the team into the relegation zone, and are expected to be backed by a vociferous home crowd.
Prior to the punishment being handed out, Everton had picked up 10 points from their last five games. The positive feeling around Sean Dyche’s side has led to a sense of defiance among Evertonians, who will be eager to see the team begin reclaiming their lost points at the first opportunity.
The Toffees will come up against a Man United team who have largely failed to convince, despite technically being the Premier League’s form team, winning four of their last five games. Ten Hag is aware that Man United are walking into a unique scenario, but has called on his players to focus on themselves and not be influenced by Everton’s sense of occasion.
“It’s always about us. I can see the opposition, I can see they are mad. Finally, it’s about us,” Ten Hag said in his press conference. “If they are mad, that’s their fuel, we have to match those standards. If we match the standards we have a very good chance to win the game.”
On the punishment handed out to Everton Ten Hag added: “I don’t know the details about [the points deduction], I don’t have an opinion. I can imagine Everton fans are very mad. We can do nothing about it. We have to match their standards.”
