‘The best year I have had’… Kyle Walker drops verdict on Man City trophy haul after Club World Cup victory
Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker has said that 2023 has been the best year of his career.
The Englishman recently lifted City’s fifth trophy of the year as he captained them to a 4-0 win over Fluminense in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Having also lifted the UEFA Super Cup back in August, Walker has now shared his verdict on what it has been like to be part of this City team.
Walker overwhelmed by City success
Speaking to the club’s media after last night’s win in Saudi Arabia, Walker had this to say on what the year has meant to him.
He said: “We’ve shown over the past 12 months we are the best team in the world. Our results prove that and the consistency we have managed has been amazing. To win these five trophies – for me, the five biggest prizes available to us – is incredible.
“I am so proud to have been a part of this and I can honestly say it’s an honour to play alongside these players; I couldn’t ask for better teammates. And it isn’t just the players – the team behind the team here at City are the best you could ever ask for and I want to put on record my thanks and appreciation for every single person who works here day to day to try and help us be the best we can be.
“The level of quality in football across the world right now is scary. It’s really, really hard to win consistently, so to be sat here today having won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup is really special and a huge achievement. It’s been the best year I have had in football and something I will never, ever forget.”
Since arriving at the Manchester club back in 2017 from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £50m, Walker has gone on to make 279 appearances across all competitions, winning 14 major titles along the way.
With City now being the first English club to win the Quintuple, it’s easy to see why Walker has been so pleased with what the side have accomplished, especially since he was the one who wore the captain’s armband for their two latest title victories.
Bearing in mind how the 33-year-old was close to leaving the club in the summer to join Bayern Munich and had to be convinced to stay by Pep Guardiola, it’d be safe to assume that the full-back is glad he stayed where he is.
