In the title match between Liverpool, Arsenal, and Man City, Jamie Carragher reveals their hidden weapon.

What Jamie Carragher thinks might be Liverpool’s secret advantage in the Premier League title chase is explained.

With 11 games left, the Reds are leading the table with a one-point advantage over Manchester City and a two-point lead over Arsenal. This Sunday afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s team will play City at Anfield in a match that will determine the eventual title. It promises to be a crucial game.

City are still considered the slight favourites to go all the way and claim a fourth successive top-flight crown, though Carragher has argued Liverpool’s effectiveness at making substitutions has the potential to swing the balance back in the Reds’ favour.

Sharing his thoughts on this topic on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Reds defender said: “I think since the five-substitute rule has come in, no one’s utilised it better than Jurgen Klopp.

“We spoke about Arsenal earlier on and you think how they can win the league: they’re the best defensively. Manchester City are probably the best team with the best individuals but this is where Liverpool can win the league, from the bench, because Klopp always uses five subs.”

Although clear this can act as a secret weapon for Liverpool, Carragher still believes City will come out on top come May, he tweeted: “I think Man City will win the league & at no point last night did I say Liverpool will!”

Liverpool have made 119 changes during matches since the start of the season, a figure far greater than City’s tally of 74. Arsenal are not far behind on 107, though they still trail the Reds in this department.

Being able to make five substitutions has certainly boosted the Reds since its permanent introduction ahead of the 2022/23 season. Klopp was one of the leading figures making a case for a change in approach, though had doubts over whether or not the notion would gain enough votes among top-flight clubs to be approved.

“We have to put the competition on our side and don’t say City has better subs than Southampton or that we have better subs than Burnley,” he said in December 2021.

“Yes, that’s probably true, but they’re still Premier League teams and can cause us problems. The problem is that this intensity for a top-class footballer in England is definitely at the edge.”
