THIAGO FALLS FOR NABY KEITA? | TEAM SELECTION | BRIGHTON V LIVERPOOL
Welcome to our live coverage as Liverpool travel to Brighton & Hove Albion in what looks to be a very tricky Premier League game.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be hoping to bounce back from their previous league game when they were beaten 3-1 by Brentford on January 2, but the games don’t get any easier for the Reds with another dangerous away game at the horizon.
Liverpool are currently seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United as a top-four finish becomes increasingly difficult as the weeks go by. An away win today would give the seventh-placed Reds a welcome boost, but a home win would see the Seagulls leapfrog their Merseyside opponents in the table.
Jurgen Klopp is having something of a selection headache as Darwin Nunez is ruled out of this game with a minor injury and Roberto Firmino is still unfit. And with Luiz Diaz and Diogo Jota long out, Cody Gakpo is in line for his Premier League debut. Could there even be a place for teenager Ben Doak?
Ex-Liverpool target Evan Ferguson starts
A notable inclusion in Brighton’s first XI today is teenager Evan Ferguson. The 18-year-old has had a great start to 2023, scoring against both Arsenal and Everton. But he is also a former Liverpool target and was on trial with the club before eventually joining the Seagulls in 2021.
Brighton Team News
As expected, Leandro Trossard is out completely, but World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister is back in the squad. Liverpool veteran Adam Lallana starts for the Seagulls.
Brighton XI: Sanchez; Gross, Dunk, Colwill, Estupinan; Caicedo, MacAllister, Lallana, Mitoma, March; Ferguson
Subs: Steele, Lamptey, Webster, Welbeck, Sarmiento, Undav, Gilmour, Van Hecke, Veltman
Smoking to United equalizer
This offside call is the worst I’ve seen this season. And I’ve seen a lot of absolutely inexplicable offside decisions. And that was just last Saturday.
Blow for Liverpool as United take the lead in Manchester derby
Some VAR controversy in Manchester derby as Bruno Fernandes equalizes for offside after possible interference from Marcus Rashford A game Liverpool will naturally want to keep an eye on as they look to at least chase United. Just under 10 minutes as I type and it’s just gone 2-1 to Manchester United who turned it around very, very quickly at Old Trafford. But back to Amex and James Milner is back in the squad after his recent muscle injury. Today on the sofa next to Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Ben Doak.
Klopp maintains confidence with a three-man midfield
I’m a little surprised by that team, to be honest. I thought there would be more changes in midfield, but it’s clear Klopp has decided to give his tried and trusted player another chance to fight back following the defeat to Wolves last weekend.
Liverpool team news confirmed: Cody Gakpo departs
This is the confirmed Liverpool squad for today: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Konate, Robertson, Fabinho, Thiago, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Gakpo
Liverpool Subs: Kelleher, Gomez, Milner, Keita, Jones, Elliott, Tsimikas, Carvalho, Doak

First news from the team
Liverpool are without Darwin Nunez, who is recovering from a minor injury which will rule him out of today’s game.
Roberto Firmino is still not fully back in training and James Milner has only trained once with the main squad, so today’s match might come too early for him.
The Reds area is still without Virgil van Dijk, but new signing Cody Gakpo is set to make his Premier League debut and is expected to start. Ben Doak could also claim his first start but may have to settle for a place on the bench. Leandro Trossard may have scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Anfield in October but was left out of Brighton’s squad today due to a bad attitude, according to the manager- Chef Roberto De Zerbi.
Seagulls teenager Evan Ferguson could be in line for a start after scoring against Arsenal and Everton this month.
Will Brighton vs Liverpool be televised?
As the kickoff is given at 3 p.m., it will not be televised. The 3 p.m. blackout has existed since the 1960s and prevents the televising of matches in the UK. The football blackout is the rule that no Premier League, Football League or FA Cup matches can be seen live on Saturdays between 14.45 and 17.15.
But fear not, ECHO Liverpool FC journalists Ian Doyle and Paul Gorst will be at the AMEX Community Stadium to keep you up to date with everything going on here.
If Liverpool beat Wolves in the FA Cup replay on Tuesday, they will be back in two weeks’ time. The joys of being a reporter on the go
Selection problems for Klopp
Injuries have plagued Liverpool all season and today is no exception.
Jurgen Klopp will be without Darwin Nunez, who is recovering from a “slight injury” and with Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota already all out, options up front look slim. Unless Klopps opts for a line-up change, the Liverpool striker will consist of Mohamed Salah, a Premier League debut for Cody Cakpo and possibly Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Or could there even be a first Premier League start for teenager Ben Doak?
