Julian Alvarez discloses reason for quitting Manchester City after two years

Julian Alvarez, a former forward for Manchester City, has disclosed why he left the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Just two years after going to the Etihad Stadium from River Plate for £14 million, the 24-year-old sealed a club-record departure from Manchester City ahead of the new season, signing for Atletico Madrid in a deal worth €95 million. March 2023 saw Alvarez sign a one-year contract extension with Manchester City until 2028.

However, after winning six trophies with the Sky Blues, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, he decided to quit Pep Guardiola’s team this summer.

Alvarez made his Atletico Madrid debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, and made his first start for Diego Simeone’s side against Girona on Sunday evening, as the City Football Group side suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano.

The 24-year-old has also revealed his reason for swapping the Premier League for La Liga, [telling ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/40880507/julian-alvarez-man-city-exit-needed-new-challenge): “I felt that I needed a change in my career. I needed to look for a new challenge and I believe that this club gives me the tools to give my best.

“I’ve come here to help the team and to fight for every title. I spoke to \[Diego\] Simeone and he said he wanted me to come here. He said that I was going to help the team and they would enhance my strengths and help me improve on my weaknesses.

“My aim is to show my best form, help the team win and take Atlético to the highest level.”

In as much as we’re Rivals, celebrating over another person downfall is not a good thing instead I will like to correct this Mistake that He is always Making”, Pep Guardiola reveals the only Mistake that Ten Hag made yesterday that cost Him the points

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has blamed Erik ten Hag for his poor substitutions following a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Saturday.

It was United’s first defeat of the season after beating Fulham 1-0 at Old Trafford last week. This time United lost to Brighton courtesy of a stoppage-time winner converted by Joao Pedro.

United deserved more from the game, but can only have themselves to blame for conceding two soft goals. Amad Diallo’s equaliser cancelled out Danny Welbeck’s opener and Erik ten Hag’s side had two goals disallowed by VAR.

After the match, Hargreaves aimed a dig at Ten Hag and his substitutions for negatively affecting the outcome of the game. He believes that taking off Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes was a mistake.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Hargreaves said: “I think they [Man United] lost it on the subs. Bruno Fernandes’ face was unbelievable; he was thinking, ‘You’re taking me off?’ Then he took Harry Maguire off, which affected the shape.”

On the other hand, the former England international was quick to praise Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler for his positive substitutions.

Hargreaves added: “The subs from Hurzeler were positive, even at a point when most people thought the game was over.”

    United face Liverpool next weekend.
