For the past few years, the St. Louis Cardinals have benefited from having two star corner infielders, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, leading their lineup. Now, the New York Yankees are reportedly intensifying their efforts to acquire Goldschmidt, and there’s growing speculation that Arenado could follow suit and join his former teammate in New York.
Sources suggest that Goldschmidt’s potential move to the Yankees might influence Arenado to waive his no-trade clause and head to the Bronx as well. Although the Yankees have shown interest in Arenado this offseason, trade talks initially stalled over financial hurdles, particularly regarding Marcus Stroman’s contract.
Should the Yankees land both players, the team could overhaul its infield, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving to second base and joining Anthony Volpe at shortstop. This shift would strengthen the Yankees’ infield as they aim to build upon their 2024 American League championship.
Since their acquisition in 2018 and 2021, respectively, Goldschmidt and Arenado have earned numerous accolades with the Cardinals, including multiple Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, and All-Star selections. However, despite their individual success, the team’s overall performance, particularly in the postseason, has been underwhelming.
The Yankees’ pursuit of these two future Hall of Famers is part of their broader strategy to strengthen their roster following key acquisitions like Max Fried, Devin Williams, and Cody Bellinger. Adding Goldschmidt and Arenado would provide added veteran leadership to complement Aaron Judge.
Nevertheless, there are obstacles to these potential trades, including Goldschmidt’s reported desire for a multi-year deal despite his recent performance decline. Arenado also has three years left on his contract, but with some deferred salary that could make him a more affordable target for New York.
While the Cardinals will surely miss their stars, the possibility of these two playing for the Yankees signals a
